Awesome book!

This is a very special book for several reasons.
First, it is well written. So, the reader won't feel tired reading it. Yes, this textbook is not tedious.

Even though the material covered is difficult, the author writing style and the graphic presentation make labor economics interesting.

Last, but not least, this is a very comprehensive book and can even be used as a reference book for undergraduates interested in other topics that use the same tools as Labor Economics.

Yvette is a five star author and embroiderer, all of whose books you should own. I do. Having produced the left-handed embroiderer's guide earlier in the year, Yvette has decided not to leave us right handers out. This is a superb dictionary for all embroiderers, so don't miss out. As with all Yvette's books it has superb attention to detail. Beautiful line drawings explain each stitch. This has just become my number one embroidery book. I am right handed but have a copy of the left hand edition which I have previously reviewed here. These books are exceptionally clear in their directions and stitches are shown worked in all sorts of different ways and in sample to really give inspiration for their use. I am finding this book invaluable in my City and Guilds stitch samples. I have already got a few stitch dictionaries in my library, including the classics, but this is my first choice now as it is so bright and light and well indexed. From Vogel's introduction : "Art/Artifact is an exhibition about the ways Western outsiders have regarded African art and material culture over the past century". Featuring art from the Buffalo Museum Of Science, the Hampton University Museu,. the American Museum Of Natural History. The works represented are almost enough to get the book 4-stars, and the Mijikenda Memorial Effigies from Kenya are first rate. A little dated in photos and a little pretentious in text, I eas just deciding between 4 stars or 3-stars, and the binding fell apart on me, which alwasys leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

About 50 to 80 percent of new mothers experience some postpartum blues, some ten to 20 percent have longer-lasting postpartum reactions, and about one or two in a thousand experience postpartum psychosis. Providing an important resource for expectant and new mothers, the authors outline various types of postpartum reaction. Board members of Postpartum Support International, psychologists Dunnewold and Sanford offer a psychobiological explanation for both "normal" and pathological reactions, discuss factors that predispose mothers toward a severe reaction, and provide a good deal of information about when, where, and how to get help. By deromanticizing our conception of new motherhood, this book will help women evaluate their negative reactions more realistically and get appropriate help when necessary. Though the book is at times repetitive, the information is extremely useful. Highly recommended.

A must-read book for all ob's

All ob's should read and recommend this book to their patients suffering from post-partum depression. When I when through post-partum depression, this was the only book we could find on the subject. In fact, I gave my doctor his own copy! It was very comforting to read about new moms feeling just like I did, especially when one can think they are going crazy. I was also fortunate enough that one of the authors, Dr. Diane Sanford, lived in St. Louis. My doctor got me in to see her. With her help and her book, it probably saved my life.

An excellent book with one big flaw

This book is truly comprehehensive, covering traditional and alternative family situations, medication options, causes, symptoms, solutions, and the range of postpartum reactions (from "baby blues" to psychosis). It's got helpful references and resources at the back of the book. There's also a risk profile questionnaire, a chapter for dads/partners, and a number of case studies. The only thing I would fault this book on, and I consider this to be a major flaw, is that *it doesn't have an index*. That's why I give it four stars instead of five. Still, it's a very helpful manual for moms, their mates, and their care providers.

Kate Ascher could not have chosen a much drier topic for a book than water mains, parking meters, railroad classification yards, and the other doodads of city infrastructure. But in Ascher's captivating book, The Works, the innards of New York City come alive. Wonderfully illustrated, the book combines text, maps, and other graphics to tell the story of the systems that keep America's greatest city running smoothly. How are traffic lights coordinated? How do potholes form and which areas have streets with the best "smoothness score"? How is mail processed? What happens when you flush the toilet? Ascher, who has a PhD in government from the London School of Economics and is now executive vice president of the New York City Economic Development Corporation, dissects the colorful workings of all these systems and much more.

The Works contains a section on pretty much every aspect of the Big Apple's infrastructure. You'll learn the mystery of the shiny silver tanks that have become a familiar sight on New York streets. (They prevent moisture from damaging underground phone lines.) Ascher explains how the city's 23 million daily pieces of mail are processed. We also learn about the 27-mile underground pneumatic mail tube that used to carry canisters with 500 letters up to 30 miles per hour around Manhattan. Also interesting: the story of the nine-foot-long, 800-pound robot submarine that city engineers send to probe leaks in the Delaware Aqueduct--which, it might interest you to know, is the world's longest continuous underground tunnel. About the Author
Kate Ascher received her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in government from the London School of Economics and her B.A. in political science from Brown University. She formerly served as assistant director of the Port at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and worked overseas in corporate finance, before her previous position as executive vice president of the Economic Development Corporation for City of New York. She is currently the director of development at Vornado.

Fantastic work
By I should be at the gym
Imagine:

*an illustration of the special machinery used just to clean the ceiling of the Holland Tunnel.

*a sidebar on the "Poo-Poo Choo-Choo" that for years transported waste 2,000 miles (!) from NYC to a dump in Texas.

*a graphic showing payphone distribution density in all 5 boroughs.

*a drawing of the simple but effective interlocking bolts and cross-tie latching that keep the corrugated metal containers on barges connected to each other so upper containers don't slide off lower ones and fall into the water.

*a key to reading construction markings that crews spray paint on the streets.

Such drawings, historical tidbits, and facts are more abundant in this book than leaves in Central Park.

This book is exceptional. As the former Vice-chair of Manhattan Community Board 5 (greater midtown Manhattan), chair of its parks committee, and member of its land use and zoning committee, I can attest to the great value of Kate Ascher's remarkable accomplishment, "The Works." New York City's infrastructure--from garbage collection to traffic control; subway signaling to cable TV distribution among franchise-controlled territories--is one of the world's most multifaceted, and at times a curious mix of the high-tech and the antiquated.

Reviews suggesting that the text is for teenagers may be accidentally misleading. "The Works" by no means is for teenagers either *primarily* or *at the exclusion of* adults. Yes, the book--especially its more heavily-illustrated sections--will no doubt fire the imagination of many teens who have engineering, design, line drawing, architectural, historical analysis, or problem-solving aptitudes. (Have a teenager who loved Legos as a kid but has outgrown them? This book will probably make a good gift.) Just because the book is broad in scope and doesn't examine each urban work it covers with the detail of a textbook for electrical engineering students at M.I.T. doesn't make it merely for adolescents.

If you enjoy TV shows on The Science Channel or Discovery, shows like "Building the Ultimate," if you are a history trivia buff, if you just like looking at diagrams or line drawings of machinery and equipment, of you're fascinated by cities, or if it is simply the cast that you love New York City, this is a great book, and I highly recommend it.

learn how it all works--with diagrams!

This book has not left the coffee table. Everyone who has come over picks it up and inevitably remarks, "Oh, so that's how it works! I always wondered how they timed the traffic lights" or some such comment. This is a book you can return to again and again--one day it's telecommunications, the next, sewage. It contains so many answers to questions you never knew you had.

After reading "The Works," I now walk around New York with a completely different awareness of the incredible infrastructure that quietly undergirds the city: I constantly notice the design of fire hydrants, street signs, and man holes; I know what a "sidewalk neckdown" is; I understand how my water gets to me from the Ashokan Reservoir in the Catskills through those crazy aqueducts (and they ARE crazy! they have a submersible submarine that perouses that thing for leaks!).

This book is a perfect gift for any man/boy/girl/hippo who likes to know how things work and likes to see them diagrammed in beautiful, scrumptious illustrations. I am one of these people.

But perhaps most importantly, this book made me forgive those terrible yellow trash trains that pull into subway stations late at night and immediately mean you will be waiting twenty more minutes for your train. I used to fear them. Now I know what they do. I forgive you, yellow trash trains.

Excellent Reference - Incredible Graphics

I am a licensed professional civil engineer that worked for the Philadelphia Water Department for 10 years and I found this book to be an excellent piece of work. This book would be a great reference for anyone ranging from a high school student to an engineer/architech/planner. The book focuses on New York City so people from the northeast USA may find some of the topics hit close to home. However, the principles and diagrams in the book apply to most cities. One of the best book I've bought in a while!

Data Structures with C++ and STL not only for C programmers

I am teaching the second programming / first data structure course in the department of electrical and computer engineering. I have used the first edition of this book several times, and as of fall of 2004 I am into the third of semester of using this second edition as a mandatory text.

This book is very good for students who already know how to program in C, C++ or Java. The first C or C++ course does not have to cover introduction to OOP though. My students learn C part of C++ in the first programming course. This book covers object oriented programming part of C++, and introduces/reintroduces pointers, file IO with streams, and C++ strings (good for former Java programmers). Then it follows into data structures. It starts with its own definitions of dynamic array that grows, and a simple linked list as basic data containers. Then it focuses on organizing access to data with stack and queue, and then migrates to the standard template library (STL). Everything is kept on the undergraduate student level. All other STL books I know assume that you are already an expert in programming or at lest for students after two programming courses, and are too difficult for average non-CS students.

I originally rated the first edition with four-stars only because it introduced pointers very late, out of the proper sequence and added the fifth star for the unique blend of introduction to OOP C++ and data structures, and STL. However, this edition is free from this inconvenience and it also makes C++ and data structures course accessible to former Java programmers. It gets true five stars from me this time.

Great Introductory Book

I actually feel that this book is a mixed bag. On one hand, the concepts are intuitively presented and are easy to understand. On the other hand, the book doesn't delve too much into technical details, which may or may not be a godsend to various students. Personally, I'd rather use the Drozdek Data Structures text, since it goes into much more detail into analysis and logic behind choosing various data structures and algorithms in order to implement an ADT.

Anyway, it's still a great textbook for an introductory course in data structures. Just be sure to get another textbook on the same material down the road if you want to get a more detailed understanding of the concepts presented.

Great book

The coverage of C++ and data structures looks pretty good. There are lots of programming examples, and the book is written very well. I'm recommending it for our 2nd year course in data structures and C++. Our students know Java, but not C++, so it's been a challenge finding a data structures book that packages a semi-introductory version of C++ with a standard course in data structures. This book appears to be the best suited out of about 5-10 books that I've reviewed for this course.

About the Author
Malcolm Bradbury (1932-2000) was a well-known novelist, critic, and academic, as well as founder of the creative writing department at the University of East Anglia. A dark comedy masterpiece

The late Malcomb Bradbury was at the top of his game when he wrote this mordantly funny satire of cultural exchanges during the Cold War. His hero, Petworth, is a bland Everyman of a British academic with two weeks to spend behind the Iron Curtain. Bradbury's trademark wordplay, his brillant observations on socialist hypocrisy, and his heartbreaking insights into the foibles of human nature, make this a deeply rewarding novel. It was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.

Interesting perspectives held my interest, plus good characters in some strange situations. Not a page turner, but good summer reading. I appreciate good use of language and structures of sentences and paragraphs...good writer.
