It's a Boy Scout manual with a couple weapons' overviews and the words "zombie" and "undead" sprinkled here and there. Its illustrations are futile attempts at humor (apparently the undead like to make graffiti?). Its subject matter isn't even the horrific Romero or Brooksian zombies. No, they use the campy, comedic relief "Braaaaains" zombies. And even then, as I said, most of the book doesn't even cover how to deal with them!

Terrible book desperately attempting to grasp onto the success of Max Brook's far superior Zombie Survival Guide and the recent resurgence zombie fandom as a result of said book. Avoid this like the undead plague.

Seems like it is missing something

If you ever read Max Brooks' Zombie Survival Guide, then you would have the basic idea of what this book is about.

The book is written on the grounds that you are a US Army solider. In the beginning you swear an oath that you will do what you have to do.

The book is divided up into many sections. Mostly related on the grounds of first aid, survival, weapon training, evasion, defense, offense, and so on.

I could see many potential of this book, but I think it somehow fails to deliver. The reason I think it fails to deliver is because the book attempts to explain real life training, but push in "zombie" stuff. For example, in the weapons section of the book, it explains about the M9, M4, M16, etc. It goes on to explain the fire rate, the capacity, and so on. Then to make it "zombie" it just paints a picture of a zombie on it. In other sections it explains about camouflage, but to add that "zombie" effect, it just says, "Be sure to stay hidden from zombies." There is one section about target practice, and it shows a score card, but to make it a "zombie," the author just painted zombies all over the card. Then in First Aid sections, it explains about how to carry people, and so on, but to add that "zombie" feeling, the diagrams just show soldiers with "Brainz" written on their helmets or they show diagrams of proper first aid, but put an obvious zombie bite to simulate injuries. I mean it's sort of like taking a Dodge, then putting a Ford sticker on it, then talking about how great Dodges are. I felt the author picked up a copy of an actual US Army manual, then to turn it into a zombie knock off, the author just added in some pictures of zombies, add some stuff about zombies between the paragraphs, then shipped it out. The zombie theme of the book felt more forced than just funny.

Zombie is just a word in this book.

If you are looking for anything zombie related, this book is not for you. It's essentially a combat manual (or combat manual like) book with the word zombie thrown in periodically. For example, it explains how to choose a machine gun emplacement from within a house and it tells you to avoid obvious windows and doors because it will be under surveillance from the enemy. The enemy are supposed to be zombies!!! They don't observe machine guns! The author doesn't even really TRY to make an imaginary attempt at a zombie threat with modified tactics to fit.

Even the illustrations don't make much sense. They show soldiers checking zombie bodies for life by sticking their fingers in the bodies mouth and performing CPR on OBVIOUSLY ILLUSTRATED ZOMBIES!

All in all HORRIBLE and out right INSULTING if you are looking for a zombie book.

Good for beginners

If you're looking for a book which focuses on Hitler's private life, forget it, you'll have to look elsewhere. The book is decidedly weak in explaining Hitler as a human being. However, there is strength in the military aspects of the book. Hitler's rational for attacking the Soviet Union and his inexplicable (and stupid! decision to declare on the USA on Dec. 11, 1941, are explored in some detail. Remember, this is a very basic work, intended for beginners or people who have a limited grasp og WWII. If you're a serious scholar of the era, this will not be your cup of tea. But if you're just starting to read about World War II and Hitler, this is not a bad start.

Medical Informatics is defined as the interdisciplinary field that studies and pursues the effective use of biomedical data, information and knowledge for scientific inquiry, problem solving, and decision making, motivated by efforts to improve human health. The book is systematized overview of up-to-date knowledge in informatics for application in clinical medicine and biomedicine, written by Professor of Biomedical Informatics at Graz University and Head of the Research Unit Human-Computer Interaction for Medicine and Health, Institute for Medical Informatics, Statistics and Documentation, Medical University Graz.

The book is designed as lecture notes for students. The aim is to provide students with key information in informatics with focus on data, information retrieval and knowledge discovery. Principles of cognitive science, human reasoning, information visualization and human-computer interaction are also included. Special emphasis is put on biomedical databases, including their acquisition, storage and use, as well as on medical decision making and problem solving methods. It also contains some basic facts on hospital information systems, including system`s architectures, workflows modeling, imaging data handling and multimedia use, together with information on data privacy, safety and security.

Although the book was planned as students` educational tools, in many aspects it succeeds to overcome this primary goal and to become a handbook of general approaches, suitable to wide audience. First of all, it can be offered as an external memory to academic teaching staff, not only those who gives lessons in biomedical informatics and computer sciences, but also those who provides education in more theoretical fundations, including theoretical mathematics, phylosophy, phylosophy of science, communicology and epistemology. This is because the book contains citations and references on important theoretical frameworks and famous theoreticians - the approach which may guide further reading. In addition, there are a plenty of illustrations, diagrams and schemas to support free text, making many abstractions, mentioned in the text, to be more exactly presented to a wide audience. By providing the list of relevant terms and their explanations, at the beginning of each chapter (Advance organizer), this book can also be taken as an advanced learner`s dictionary in computer science and biomedical informatics. The term-based index, provided in the appendix, allows quick searching for specific parts inside the book. For all these reasons, this book can be used by many other professionals in computer science, including scientists, programmers and systems engineers, to systematize and supplement their knowledge. It may, even more, get along with novices and illiterates in computer science and biomedical informatics, to provide them with a systematic overview of the field and to guide their learning.

Computer science has rapidly been transforming from computer engineering to a multifaceted interdisciplinary approach in which cognitive science, psychology and philosophy go along with sophisticated technology and advanced mathematical methods. On the other hand, increasing demands in health care and new biotechnology advances, by means of genomics, proteomics and metabolomics - produce enormous quantities of multi-dimensional and weakly structured data that should be analysed, integrated and use to improving health. This put requirements on computer engineers and programers to continuosly develop new and more efficient approaches for data management, information retrieval from data and new knowledge discovery. At the same time, there is a demand for new technologic and software solutions to be accessible and simple for use for medical staff and to as much as possible follow human mental and learning processes. Sometimes, it is difficult for individuals to orient themselves in this complex and rapidly progressive field and to understand complex terms and high technology language. It is especially the case with medical professionals and all others who are not deeply involved in computer science. For all these individuals, a systematic guide, as this handbook is, would be very useful. It would be also valuable for academic staff, especially in surroundings such as our, where educational curriculums and the literature are insufficient in this kind of knowledge.

A Comprehensive Overview on Biomedical Informatics

This is an interesting book, where the author presents a very broad overview of several topics related to Biomedical Informatics, enabling someone entering this field of work to retain the main concepts and obtain up to date pointers to further deepen specific topics of interest.

From data acquisition and storage to visualization, ranging through privacy, regulatory and other practical and theoretical topics, this book touches several fundamental aspects of the innovative interface between Medical and Technology domains that is Biomedical Informatics.

Each chapter starts by providing a useful inventory of definitions and commonly used acronyms for each topic, and throughout the text, the reader finds several real-world examples, methodologies and ideas, that greatly complement the technical and theoretical background.

In summary, this is an important companion both for students, engineers and partitioners.

Book Report: Cockfidence

Several months ago, a close friend visited a urologist about some “Men’s issues.” It was beyond the doctor’s scope of practice, so he recommended a sexologist to sort through some issues for this friend. It sounded logical at the time, but my friend lives in a rural part of the country. A quick Google search revealed the closest one was almost four hours away. So my friend had a conundrum: How do you take this doctor’s advice seriously? So in respect for my buddy, definitely not me, because I don’t need that stuff, I did another Google search for his sake and found a book with “Cock” in the name of a book; I was intrigued. I explored it a little and decided this would be the best way to help my friend. It seemed legit, maybe just the thing for me- errr, him- to get over some hang ups.

My friend was thankful for the book.

Written by two obvious liberals from San Francisco, the back cover declares: “This book will show you how to find your personal power and have mind-blowing sex and passionate connections with women.” Both women specialize in this kind of therapy and run a blog covering sexual therapy issues. In lieu of actual therapy, this book would have to do.

It is full of good advice and practices, many of which my friend said he already knew, but it was still good to have it reinforced. Cockfidence tells a man how to be a great lover from the perspective of the woman, from the monogamous married man to the philandering single. What does she want? What keeps her interested? They make plenty of pitches for men’s masculinity. In fact, it comes across as something women deeply desire. I’m not talking a mindless brute, but simply a strong, musk-scented, caring man.

As a part of that, they offer sexual fantasies, or, favorite sexual movies. Most men think of a porn scene, while most women think of romantic movies. They tell how essentially both movies are the same. There are a couple hilarious examples in the book.

They offer three types of sexual experiences, playing off of the sexual movies: Romantic, passionate, and dominant. The romantic is easy: Caresses, long kisses, holding each other tight. The passionate gets wild- up against the wall, hanging from the chandelier, and simply going at each other. Then the dominant movie. Some people may lose their minds at this. It’s probably not what you think. It is the man being in charge, giving commands to the woman, not suggestions or requests. He’s taking what he wants. They make the point that this is what many women want too, whether they say it or not. Once you get here in the book, you should realize this. This isn’t bondage, but sex that is satisfying for both parties. You get here and you realize it’s supposed to be exciting and fulfilling for both parties. I took it as a way of clearing up the confusion modern feminism has caused in this area.

This was a strange read for me. I’ve never really sat down to read about sex and how to be better at sex. Reading it and then writing this review, I’ve simply decided to just jump in.

It dispelled some stereotypes or myths, introduced a couple new ideas (Sexual movies are somewhat of a eureka moment) and then it reinforced a few things I already knew, encouraging me where I was timid before. It was strange in a sense that two San Francisco authors, one a self-proclaimed bisexual, gave a good deal of encouragement to the masculine male. They don’t understand masculinity as much as they allude to, but they do a much better job than I gave them credit for initially. In a world where feminists have dreamt a world full of self-impregnating women and vagina cantatas, it’s refreshing that not all feminists are batshit crazy slut-shaming whores.

This book does require practice. There are quite a few things in there that I took as solid nuggets but I’ve since forgotten. Fantastic book for the modern man!

I am a 46 year old recently divorced man trying to figure out this new world. It's a great read for any man who wants to be a spectacular lover! Some very simple techniques explained in a practical straight forward manner. Thank you for letting us guys in on the inner workings of female sexuality! We need all the help we can get! Lol!

I am a single man that walks around in this world knowing that if a woman says yes to me she will receive an amazing confident experience. Psalms in Hymn form and rhyme!

I love reading the writings of Sir Isaac Watts because EVERYTHING he writes is Spiritually edifying. This is a great book in which he carefully composes the Psalms in poetic beauty. Each paragraph captures the essence of each Psalm and each Scriptural Truth yet rhymes in perfect harmony. He was a gifted spiritual giant. These verses were complied as hymns for the church to sing before music was a part of early church worship. Yet, they are true to the written Truth of God's Holy Word! You'll enjoy them. He incorporates the prophetic verses with references to the Savior Christ to come! Exciting church hymnal material (without the musical notes) and an exciting view of church history. If you love the Psalms and love the Bible....you'll love this early book of writings from one of our church fathers!

Born in 1674, Isaac Watts is known as the "Father of English Hymnody" and credited with writing 750 hymns. Many of these are currently in use, "Oh God our Help in Ages Past" being one of the most familiar. This book is the result of his daunting goal to write translations --in rhyme and meter--of the Psalms of David, in everyday language for congregational singing.This book of his translations is a wonderful source for a music history research paper.

Poor Kindle version

The Kindle edition is clean but lacks stanza divisions or a true table of contents. Hopefully I can find (or create) a better version. I've heard so much about Isaac Watts and would love to be able to read the full volume and not just the few popular hymns I already know ("O the Wonderful Cross," "Joy to the World," etc.)

Martin Gardner (1914-2010) is regarded as one of the world's leading experts on Lewis Carroll and his work. I predict this book will be a Mathematical Recreations classic.

Martin Gardner is the name that always comes to mind when one thinks of Mathematical Recreations. Anyone who ever read Scientific American magazine will remember his column in every issue. He wrote the column for 25 years;and made puzzle lovers of millions of readers. His fans ran the gamut from those with a very elementary background in mathematics to those with a high degree of knowledge. What he did was to make mathematics something to enjoy and use as a recreational pursuit. Over the years, he wrote about 70 books,many that have been popular for a long time.
In this book, he has chosen 340 puzzles from his columns of over 25 years. He has selected simple problems as well as medium and difficult. Each problem is supplied with an answer or solution . Often, answers in puzzle books are sketchy;but here we not only get an answer but also a good idea and explanation on arriving at the solution.
The most interesting thing about this book is that it is geared to all levels of puzzle solvers (OMNIHEURISTS). I am sure that someone who has worked only a few puzzles,and who hasn't,will find many quite easy and in a short time will progress to those with more challenge; due particularly to the answer explanations.At the same time ,those with a lot of experience will find plenty to amuse themselves.
Along with a pick of some of the best of the columns over the years,Gardner has included 12 of the best brainteasers to have come his way since he stopped writing the column in 1986.
Also, we are given a list of all the other books that Martin Gardner wrote over the years. Along with that, there is a list of selected titles for those interested in more in the world of Recreational Mathematics.

The home trainer for the brain

Great collection of thought puzzles, some well known, some highly original.

What I like most is that every problem, from the simplest up to the really difficult, has a twist to it: You may think you immediately see the answer, but there is always something you didn't think of. For example Problem 1.1 (to be seen in the Excerpt when you click on the image of the book): How many dates in a year can be confusing if you don't know whether they are in European notation (28/2/2007) or US (2/28/2007)? Your first thought is "That's easy, just 12x12", until you think a second time.

If you want to train your brain, solve a few of Martin Gardner's puzzles every day. Or just do it to have fun.

Daniel C. Goldie is president of Dan Goldie Financial Services, LLC, a registered investment advisory firm. A former professional tennis player and Wimbledon quarterfinalist, he has been recognized by Barron’s as one of the top 100 independent financial advisors in the United States. He graduated from Stanford University and has an MBA degree from the Haas School of Business, University of California at Berkeley.

Gordon S. Murray spent more than twenty-five years working on Wall Street, primarily at Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, and Credit Suisse First Boston in a variety of institutional sales and management roles. After his Wall Street career, Murray worked as a consultant with Dimensional Fund Advisors. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and earned an MBA from Columbia University.

Elegant summary of the core of personal investing

One of the advantages of a college education with a major in finance is that you learn the fundamentals, and, more importantly, you learn the boundaries of the universe in terms of what the field includes and what it excludes. Spend an hour or so reading this book, and you will also get that comfortable feeling that comes from knowing that you understand what personal investing is really all about. You will get the "big picture" and how it affects you.

I have been a full time faculty member teaching at the college level for the past 35 years and must say that the authors have managed to capture the essence of personal investing in about as few pages as I have ever seen and with a clarity that is very rare in books on this topic. I intend to make it required reading for both my undergraduate and graduate personal finance classes.

I might also add that any negative reviews posted to this site are likely to come from Wall Street brokers who make their living by exploiting the general public's ignorance on investing. These brokers don't like books that clarify and illuminate rather than mystify and obfuscate basic principles. As a lifelong educator, I applaud Goldie's and Murray's noble effort to help readers educate themselves so as not to be fooled by the same Wall Streeters who disgraced themselves in 2008 and nearly destroyed our economy with their greediness. Anyone who feels they don't know enough about investing should read this book. It is a gem.

The title says it all - The Answer

You won't be getting this book from your broker for Christmas. You don't need to read a bunch of "Beat The Market!!!!!" books to develop a sound approach to investing. Evaluate your personal investment goals and timeframe, take a gut check on your appetite for risk, and accept that risk and returns are correlated. The authors make a compelling, data driven argument in under 100 pages that describes a "no regrets" approach to investing. Market timing, stock picking, commodity speculating, etc. ultimately benefit the trading pros over the average investor. Choose your asset allocation model with a few simple principles, then buy diversified global capitalism for your equity component with low expenses. And hold it. Done. You won't be the big winner in any given year, but you will likely out perform 95%+ of investors who buy the proven myth that they can beat the market. There are many purveyors of this snake oil, but few truth tellers. Murray and Goldie get it right, and this book is so short and to the point that you must read it.

the investment primer for everyone

I just read The Investment Answer this morning in under an hour and it is brilliant -- comprehensive without being overwhelming, easy for a broad audience to read and understand, and most importantly, easy for anyone to execute.

Over the last 30 years, this is the model we have used to invest, and it has served us very well. But we have not been able to articulate this sensible plan to friends and family (especially our children) in a way that was understandable and compelling. The temptation to "take the bait" from Wall Street is strong. Many friends and colleagues who are more "sophisticated" investors suffered the sad outcomes so elegantly described in the book.

Gordon and Daniel -- thank you, thank you for writing this book. I am placing my order for 10 copies to give away to family and friends this morning. You have accomplished what few have -- a lasting legacy that will positively impact many families for a lifetime!
