Morrie Schwartz -- A Teacher to the Last

This wonderful book focuses on the meaning of life, from the perspective of a teacher (Morrie Schwartz) who is about to lose his life and his pupil, (Mitch Albom) who has lost his focus on what is important. They come together for 14 Tuesdays (just like they did while the author was a college student at Brandeis) before the professor passes away of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).

This book is filed with the most beautiful sayings you can imagine. Here are a few examples: 'Giving to other people is what makes us feel alive.' 'Love each other or perish.' 'Everybody knows they are going to die, but nobody believes it. If we did, we would do things differently.' 'Learn to detach from experience.'

Many people would avoid a book on this subject, because they do not want to think about death. Although Morrie Schwartz is dying throughout this book, the subject is really about living rather than dying. Few will find the dying to be distressing, even though it is graphically and frequently addressed.

For those of us with many years to live, this book can be a wake-up call to start really living now -- in the ways we would if we were about to die, as well as to learn how to treat others while we still have them with us. For those who have but little time left, this book can be an inspiration for how to get the most out of the remaining time.

You will probably find it heart-warming (as I did) to find out that the advance on this book was paid in time to help defray some of Professor Schwartz's medical expenses.

Muy bueno, con algunos detalles.

El final de la saga Harry Potter, de verdad muy bueno el libro, lo lei en menos de una semana. Entre los puntos positivos el mas destacable: Al fin se devela el misterio Severus Snape (sorprendente!!!!!!!!!), asimismo tiene poco desperdicio, es decir, poco material de relleno como ocurria en ediciones anteriore. La despedida de los Dursley es bien llevada, sin mucho detalle insignificante, muy al grano. Otro punto curioso del libro es que nombra a casi todos los personajes de los anteores, si la memoria no me falla tan solo Gildroy Lockhart, Mirtle La LLorona y Madame Maxime son los no nombrados. Si bien es cierto a muchos de ellos era para tan solo decir: alli estaba Cho sentada.

Tiene sus puntos negativos, entre ellos: demasiadas muertes,algunas innecesarias y sin sentido a la trama. Existe una laguna con Dolores Umbridge, ya que en el sexto libro estaba en San Mugo y en este libro aparece con un alto cargo en el ministerio de magia!!!!!!!! como se recupero???, no menciona nada al respecto. Tambien recuerda al señor de los anillos en uno de sus pasajes cuando habla de que el cargar un Horrocrux en el cuello le producia una sensacion de pesades, desanimo y mal genio a quien lo portara (Ron, Harry y Hermione), lo cual por lo menos a mi me parecio chocante.

Como comentario final, el lirbo tiene un epilogo (no se titula asi), pero deja un buen sabor de boca y sobre todo el penultimo parrafo no deja de sorprenderte.

El inicio es tal vez un poco lento, pero despues de la mitad del libro, definitivamente se mueve a un paso que no deja espacio para aburrirse. Todas los pequeños detalles que en algun momento no parecian tener mucha importancia, aqui te muestra el por que debiste prestarle atencion. Si es que eres fan de la serie, algunos detalles quiza te dejen un tanto incredulo en cuanto a como es posible que hayan llegado a tener tal importancia y las sorpresas de la batalla final aun me tienen un tanto sorprendido (quienes menos te lo hubieses imaginado no terminan de manera feliz). Pero a pesar de los altibajos y de lo doloroso de algunas despedidas, este libro es una gran muestra de como cerrar una historia. Me quito el sombrero ante doña Rowling.

Me encanta este libro. Tengo toda la colección pero este es el que más me gusto. Es muy interesante la historia y apesar de lo extenso que es me quede con ganas de mas.... La verdad no se compara para nada con la película es mucho más interesante leerlo y imaginarlo x ti mismo. Se los recomiendo ampliamente este y cada uno de la Zaga.

About the Author
Harvey Lodish is Professor of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a member of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. Dr. Lodish is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and President (2004) of the American Society for Cell Biology. He is well Known for his work on cell membrane physiology, particularly the biosynthesis of many cell-surface proteins, and on the cloning and functional analysis of several cell-surface receptor proteins, such as the erythropoietin and TGF_receptors, and transport proteins, including those for glucose and fatty acids. Dr. Lodish teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in cell biology.

Arnold Berk is Professor of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics and a member of the Molecular Biology Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Berk is also a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is one of the original discoverers of RNA splicing and of mechanisms for gene control in viruses. His laboratory studies the molecular interactions that regulate transcription initiation in mammalian cells, focusing particular attention on transcription factors encoded by oncogenes and tumor suppressors. He teaches introductory courses in molecular biology and virology and an advanced course in cell biology of the nucleus.

Chris A. Kaiser is a cell biologists and geneticist who has made fundamental contributions to understanding the basic processes of intracellular protein folding and membrane protein trafficking. His laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he is Professor of Biology, studies how newly synthesized membrane and secretory proteins are folded and sorted in the compartments of the secretory pathway. Dr. Kaiser teaches genetics to undergraduates and graduate students at MIT.

Monty Krieger is Thomas D. & Virginia W. Cabot Professor in the Department of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. For his innovative teaching of undergraduate biology and human physiology as well as graduate cell biology courses, he has received numerous awards. His laboratory has made contributions to our understanding of membrane trafficking through the Golgi apparatus, and has cloned and characterized receptor proteins important for the movement of cholesterol into and out of cells.

Matthew P. Scott is Professor of Developmental Biology and Genetics at Stanford University School of Medicine and Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a past president of the Society for Developmental Biology. He is known for his work in developmental biology and genetics, particularly in areas of cell-cell signaling and homeobox genes and for discovering the roles of developmental regulators in cancer. Dr. Scott teaches development and disease mechanisms to medical students and developmental biology to graduate students at Stanford University.

Clear Introduction to Cell Biology

This book is a very clearly written introduction to cellular biology. I would recommend it to anybody with at least a college-level Biology I understanding. The text is detailed, so for those looking for an overview of the subject, this may not be the book for you.

The book is divided into three sections:
1) Chemical and Molecular Foundations (3 chapters)
2) Genetics and Molecular Biology (5 chapters)
3) Cell Structure and Function (11 chapters)
4) Cell Growth and Development (5 chapters)

The first section is mostly a review of topics from introductory biology with additional details. For example, it briefly illustrates how a binding pocket on an enzyme works.

The second section reviews transcription, translation, overviews important lab techniques, epigenetics, and how gene expression is controlled.

The third section covers cell structure and function in detail. It covers membrane structure, organelle structure, vesicular traffic, signaling pathways, and the cell cycle (among other topics).

The final section builds on the previous sections by discussing tissues formation, stems cells, nerve cells, immunology, and cancer.

I used this book for an undergraduate Cell Biology course at a research university, and I read almost every page. It gave me exactly the foundation I needed to boost my bioinformatics research.

Great book. Easy to digest and clearly written. If you haven't taken biochem or molecular bio in a while, the first few chapters will quickly bring you back up to speed.

My take on Molecular Cell Biology Reference Book by Lodish et. al

This book was recommended by my lecturer and is used as the main reference book for eukaryotic cell biology module. I found this book was very useful and informative. It made studying this subject fun for me as I am mainly a visual learner and the book was illustrated well. The thickness of the book can be intimidating to some but it's a good book especially for those who are studying molecular cell biology.

"A story of unlimited inner strength'

What a great, well written book of unlimited courage and inner strength. Others may not have survived this terrible ordeal. Hurray for Liz"s great strength and fortitude in healing herself through the years. It proves we can heal and grow no matter what life throws our way---if we work at it.

If you are looking for healing and hope this book is for you

I appreciated this book, with its’ honesty and hope for healing the author conveys. I liked how it was written, easy to follow and easy to read for such a heavy subject matter. In this day and age I would expect the author to capitalize on the heart-breaking details, but she doesn’t. She explains in a gentle, not explicit, way so the reader understands what is happening. My heart broke for the loss of her childhood, but she conveys it in such a lovingly innocent way I also felt hope for her recovery. I think any teen and young adult that has been through such trauma should read this book. Elizabeth Myers shows there is hope, healing and a semblance of recovery with the right kind of help, encouragement and desire. A couple of my friends graciously agreed to read this book and they approved of the way it was written and how the author described her childhood and road to recovery. We all agreed it might be more upsetting to a younger child going through this situation and would not recommend it for the young reader. We also agreed that it would be great encouragement for those thinking about getting help and desiring to recover from their trauma.

Another fantastic manga drawn by Kurone Mishima based on a popular light novel, "The Devil Is a Part-Timer!" by Satoshi Wagahara. The art is cute as usual but what really caught my eye was the short story near the end depicting how voice actors give life to animation characters. Overall I would recommend others to purchase the book because it's very fun to read.

About the Author
Helen Kennerley is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and a founder member of the Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre, where she is the director of the Diploma / MSc in Advanced Cognitive Therapy Studies. She is an experienced clinician specialising in childhood trauma, dissociative disorders, and self-injurious behaviours. She has made valuable contributions to the field of cognitive therapy through her popular workshops and her writings. Amongst other publications, she is the author of Overcoming Anxiety and Overcoming Childhood Trauma and co-author of An introduction to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy". In 2002, Helen was also voted one of the most influential female cognitive therapists in Britain by BABCP members.

Well worth reading

Having suffered from serious anxiety and having had professional advice before, it was my counsellor who suggested this book. The idea is to read and apply the book. This way you learn your own problems and that starts the ball rolling to how to handle them and re educate yourself. I have read many books but I particularly like the way this is structured. It's not as hard as it sounds once you get the hang of catching thoughts and noting them down, then you can look at what kind of thoughts they are how to deal with them. Well worth reading!
