Insightful help for preaching biblical theology

I bought this book to help me with preaching on the Psalms and have found it very useful. I was also intrigued by the problem of relating the book of Esther, especially the last few chapters, to our Christian lives today.
While I was disappointed to find there was not a single reference to Esther in the book, I have appreciated the way it makes you think through such issues as:
What is the relationship between the Old and New Testaments?
What is the central message of the bible?
How does each passage relate to the central message about? Christ? What does this mean to us as we seek to preach it?
The book has stimulated my thinking. It is one that would be worth reading a couple of times, and then consulting as you preach on particular biblical passages.
Goldsworthy has some interesting things to say about expository preaching, even sometimes using humour to get his message across.
A couple of the interesting things he says:
It is easy to preach about the exhortations to holy living in such a way that you ignore grace and bind yourself and your congregation with law again!
Preaching from the gospels must be done realising that the message Jesus preached to his first disciples needs to be nuanced in the light of his death, resurrection and ascension.
Goldsworthy explains these things much better than me!
Highly recommended.

Towards a Biblical Theology for preachers

While many good books exist on preaching, many of which I have read, this one goes the extra mile. Goldsworthy's main premise is that the Christian Bible is the One Word Written of the One God about salvation in Jesus Christ. While indeed, we do need to be careful in how we approach the Old Testament within its own historical and literary context (in agreement with OT Theologians), Goldsworthy makes the important point that the apostolic testimony about Christ, from the Hebrew Scriptures, is the model that we have from the New Testament. There is a lengthy treatment of his understanding of Biblical Theology (similar to According to Plan). His Biblical Theology attempts to clearly see the continuity and discontinuity between the Covenants, while affirming the central subject matter of both: Jesus Christ. The second part of the book then puts a biblical theological approach to the Scriptures into practice. There are sections on HOW to preach the Law, the Psalms, the Prophets, Historical Narrative, etc. Interstingly, he even shows how Biblical Theology applied to preaching the New Testament must result in some changes in our use of the texts. There is something for everyone here: for the interested Bible study leader, some clear tips on how to understand the Bible; for the seminarian or pastor, a great theological resource as well as hands on help from an outstanding evangelical theologian.

In seminary a professor warned fledgling preachers, "Never, ever preach the Old Testament through Christian eyes." Such nonsense can take the wind right out of a baby preacher's sails in a hurry. Goldsworthy eloquently and seamlessly draws together all Scripture into a coherent whole testifying to Jesus Christ -- typologically, prophetically, and as ultimate fulfillment. This is one of the best and most relevant books I have ever read as a pastor and preacher.

Fun & enjoyable read for both adults and children!

Very enjoyable book for both adults and children. The humorously conveyed message of the book is that life will inevitably deal you a rough hand, most likely at a terrible time. (But when is there a "good" time for bird poop?) You can get mad or adapt. Great message, well communicated, fun illustrations. We're going to make this part of the bedtime reading rotation for our family. Excellent gift idea for the holidays.

Academic, erudite and immensely readable

If Michael Dylan Foster's book reads much like a Doctoral dissertation, it is because it is based on his 2003 Doctoral dissertation: "Morphologies of Mystery: Yôkai and Discourses of the Supernatural in Japan, 1666-1999". That noted, "Pandemonium and Parade" is in no way a watered-down version of its parent text. It includes further research conducted over the following seven years, along with a generous sampling of illustrations, both historical and current.

In addition to being an erudite and meticulously researched history of the yôkai phenomenon in Japan, Dr. Foster is an excellent and engaging writer, who successfully conveys a deep love for his subject matter, while exploring in depth the cultural, psychological and fantastical elements of both the historical and present-day fascination these outlandish supernatural but all too earthly spirits hold over the consciousness of both the Japanese and students of folklore worldwide.

Dr. Foster's original Doctoral thesis has accompanied me on two visits to Japan; since its release, "Pandemonium and Parade" has been my companion on yet another, and is a volume I keep at close hand here at home, both for reference and for enjoyment of his literary style.

Anyone with an interest in yôkai will find this a richly rewarding addition to their library, I cannot think of a finer work in English on the subject.

Academic Yet Excellent

Pandemonium and Parade is not an easy read. The author's highly academic approach to his subject matter makes this book often read like a dressed-up doctoral dissertation.

That said, there is a wealth of information regarding (for lack of a better term) the supernatural in Japanese culture, and the multi-disciplinary approach really expands the subject's overall context.

I can't help wishing, however, that the book had a somewhat more comprehensive index and perhaps a glossary of terms (I know the field of yokai fairly well and still found many new terms I had either not encountered before, or had found in very different context). I also wish Japanese terms were introduced with their kanji renderings, which can be so highly informative in understanding some of the nuance of the vocabulary.

If you are looking for a good introduction to yokia and the supernatural in Japan, you are probably better off with F. Hadland Davis or Royall Tyler. But, if you know the subject reasonably well, this book will really expand and deepen both your knowledge of Japanese monster-ology, and your appreciation.

A Few Drawbacks, But Still Worthy

Yes, the book is academic and it can sometimes bog down in boring rhetoric. It is rarely engaging to the point of one's being unable to put it down, but, after the longwinded introductory chapter, it does provide a very interesting overview of the history and significance of yokai in Japanese culture, past and present (including manga and anime). Michael Dylan Foster not only explains some of the chief representatives of traditional and contemporary yokai, he provides an excellent history of how yokai evolved as a serious subject of inquiry and also discusses the place of yokai in the matrix of Japanese culture. Academics are likely to appreciate the book for its insights more than those mainly interested in light reading about the yokai phenomenon. The book shouldn't be compared to those that are chiefly collections of old myths and legends.

For me, a major drawback is the relative lack of space devoted to one major form of yokai, the yurei or ghost, which is so important in Japanese literature, theatre, and art. And, despite the author's expert analysis of the kuchi-sake-onna or Slit-Mouthed-Woman, I was surprised that he never alludes to the possibility of potential influence from the gabu head in the bunraku puppet theatre. The gabu shows the face of a pretty girl but when the puppeteer pulls a string the upper and lower parts of the face are split by a gruesome, ear-to-ear mouth of sharp gold teeth, the effect of which is heightened by eyes that widen to become large squares, and horns that sprout from the hair. The character is really a serpent spirit in disguise. Come to think of it, Japan's upbiquitous serpents also get short shrift in this book, which, admittedly, does not attempt to be an encyclopedia, like Yokai Attack!

Pandemonium and Parade isn't perfect but it's a very worthy contribution.

More than just a book -

This is an AWESOME gift of information. I was in the middle of reading it when my beloved husband had to have emergency open-heart surgery so I took it with me to read in the hospital. This is a staggeringly huge gift and the knowledge will change your life.

Eight or nine years ago I had the pleasure of attending an Andreas Moritz lecture in a small book store in Incline Village near Lake Tahoe. I was fascinated by the extensive knowledge Andreas had in Ayuvedic medicine and the human digestive system. At that time I purchased the 1st edition of, "Lifting the Veil of Duality" called, "Freedom From Judgment" as well as, "The Key to Health and Rejuvenation".These books have been instrumental in my growth as a human being and correlated with other modern philosophies: ie; Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, as well as many ancient understandings. Almost 10 years ago, when reading and trying to understand these philosophies I had two contributing factors that got in my way; fear and denial. When I read some of the one star reviews I am reminded of that time. Today, I stand for all possibilities. Life is no longer a struggle. It has become an evolving masterpiece of the person that I have always been. I look forward to buying the revised edition. Although I've managed to keep it together my original copy is in pieces.

A "How-To" Book for Renewing One's Life

My life has had good days and challenging days. This marvelous book has helped me discover that every day I have the opportunity to freshly re-start my life without carrying forward the baggage I have accumulated the day before--even all the days before. Moritz slowly helped me build a foundation for making this possible by enabling me to question without fear all my beliefs about living the "good life." This enabled me to replace them with a much more coherent, logical and practical approach to living with much less stress, strain and concern.

This required no great leaps of faith on my part. He helped me build a new paradigm about meaning and purpose in one's life, and gently offered the "how-to"s I could put into practice with amazing results. Yes, it took some courage to let go of my past patterns dealing with day-to-day issues. But as I did, the results were worth every ounce of effort a hundredfold. I have given this book to many friends who have observed my calmer and happier countenance and questioned me about it.

The good and the bad of it.

I love Indian romances not so much for the romance..Course I enjoy a good romance but I enjoy them much more when they tell so much about the tribes and the way they lived...The charactors were great and the story was interesting but alas such as it is with romnce novels they can never meet and just fall in love its a long haul or he loves me he loves me not on both ends. No matter how many times they make love one of them is always running or being stupid. This book followed the same old road with sickenly sweet everyone is happy at the end. To me a real romance story is they know they love each other and do what they can to be together aginst all odds. In any situation.

Incredible!

I kept thinking about this story and the more I read the more I knew I had read it before! I loved it then and I loved it the second time around too!

I enjoy reading books I've enjoyed over and over again, especially when they are well written. I'm thrilled to find that there is a story about their daughter twenty years later. I'm looking forward to reading it.

Thank you Theresa Scott. Reading keeps me focused on the lives of the characters in the story rather than on the 24/7 pain I'm in that will never go away in this system of things. So again thank you.

Love scenes were great, but the story telling was even better!

Great book from the beginning to the end. From the very beginning, I was shocked!! I don't want to spoil the book, so I'll just say that it was unexpected, but "real life". Fighting Wolf did not take one look at the beautiful Sarita and change his course of action. He just decided to have both. Love it! I highly recommend this book.
