I love the pictorial I just wish the photos were bigger & the print! Thank you for teaching how to be loving & expressing God with our bodies! I wish I could give 4.5 yet it's not an option! :) I was taught to learn these finger gestures by Buddha Maitreya The Christ & am so glad I did, this should be taught in schools & on television, in dance & sports, people shouldn't real worry it's labeled, I don't, I'm not Japanese Buddhist, yet I love the love in them & the love & woodworks in all the beings & religions, best read yet! :)

About the Author
Author of The Beyond Mind Papers Elias Capriles studied Philosophy at the graduate level at the Central University of Venezuela (Caracas), and at the postgraduate level at the University of The Andes (Merida, Venezuela). He carried out his studies on Buddhist and in general Asian spirituality, philosophy and psychology outside academic institutions, with Tibetan teachers and through his own reading and research. The same applies to his studies on psychology, which were carried out through extensive readings and his own practice at the spiritual emergency refuges he ran in India and Nepal in the mid 1970s. He also carried out his own independent psychedelic research in the 1960s and 1970s in Venezuela, India and Nepal. He teaches philosophy, Buddhism, Asian art and elective subjects at the University of The Andes in Merida, Venezuela (formerly as Chairman of Eastern Studies, currently in the Research Center on Africa and Asia), and is an instructor in the Santi Maha Sangha training in Buddhism and Dzogchen in the International Dzogchen Community presided by Dzogchen Master Chogyal Namkhai Norbu. From 1977 through December 1982 he spent most of his time in retreat, intensively practicing Dzogchen in caves and cabins in the Himalayas. He has authored fourteen books in Spanish a:nd English, of which 11 were published in Nepal, Spain and/or Venezuela; he has posted provisional versions of another five books in English on his website; and has had over forty articles and several book chapters (English and Spanish) published in the US, Spain, France, Italy, India, Russia, Venezuela and El Salvador (these deal with comparative philosophy, transpersonal psychology, political philosophy, philosophy of history, political ecology, Buddhism, Dzogchen, Asian and Latin American history, Asian religions and mysticism, the history of Asian religions, sociology, etc.). His work has been discussed in books on Latin American philosophy in France, Spain, Mexico and Venezuela; in papers in the Journal of Transpersonal Psychology and several other academic journals; and in various encyclopedia entries.

About the Author
Gary W. Gallagher is the John L. Nau III Professor in the History of the American Civil War at the University of Virginia. The author or editor of numerous books, most recently The Union War (2011) and Becoming Confederates: Paths to a New National Loyalty (2013), he has also participated in more than three dozen television projects in the field, and is the recipient of the University of Virginia's highest teaching award.
Joan Waugh, professor of History at UCLA, has published numerous essays and books on Civil War topics, including her prize-winning U.S. Grant: American Hero, American Myth (2009). Waugh also has held fellowships from the Huntington Library, National Endowment for the Humanities, and Gilder Lehrman Institute and been honored with four teaching prizes, including UCLA's most prestigious teaching honor, the Distinguished Teaching Award.

The American War: The History of the Civil War Era is sure to spark much debate in the world of professional historians as well as among those in the non-academic arena who are fascinated by America’s bloodiest war. Professors Gary Gallagher and Joan Waugh have authored an extremely well researched and argued work that seeks to analyze the multiple players and events during the tumultuous years before, during, and after the War. With clear and concise prose, the authors effectively utilize the latest historical knowledge based upon primary resources to illustrate the multi-dimensional aspect of the conflict that pitted the United States of American against the newly created, but determined to survive as an independent nation, Confederate States of America. The American War argues, with convincing historical evidence, that the War was not simply a “War between the States”, but was in fact a struggle between two separate and distinct nations fighting to ensure the survival of their very different visions of the future of North America.

The American War describes how the loyal citizens of the United States entered the conflict with the belief that the “union” must be preserved at all costs, while the Confederate States were equally determined to ensure that their new nation, founded upon the institution of slavery, would continue in perpetuity for generations to come. A concise, high quality look at the Civil War!

Professors Gallagher and Waugh bring their extensive knowledge of the Civil War Era to a concise and accurate portrayal of the great American struggle. This book builds on previous works and does an exceptional job of combining the multiple facets of the Civil War. It encompasses the causes, roles of women, changes to the status of African-Americans after emancipation, and the consequences of the war through Reconstruction. The final chapter regarding the way in which the war was remembered by those who survived the conflict brings the book to a satisfactory conclusion. The book is written in an engaging and straightforward manner that makes it easily accessible and entertaining to the seasoned Civil War history buff, the novice high school US history student, and anyone in between with an interest in American history or the Civil War Era.

As a high school AP US History teacher, this book will surely become a staple resource when teaching the Civil War Era. It is a tremendous resource for any teacher to have at their disposal and could even be used as a standalone textbook for teaching the Civil War Era to high school students. Its concise nature will not overwhelm students, but gives enough detail to maintain their interest. The book is broken up into easily digestible chunks within each focused chapter. I would highly recommend any American history teacher add this book to your collection. You will not be disappointed and will surely pull material from it to use in class for years to come.

The American War: Outstanding and Highly Recommended

Simply put, this is the finest and most accessible single-volume on the Civil War to date. Gallagher and Waugh open by placing slavery in its central position regarding sectional tensions, and conclude with how the memory of the war influences our understanding of it. Extremely readable, the authors rely on a host of documentary evidence, from famous speeches to little-known diaries, to support their narrative. Their analysis of the conflict casts the war as a conflict between two nation-states, albeit one arguably illegitimate and unrecognized by other world powers. Gallagher and Waugh dispel myths, such as the notion that the South had no real chance of success, and argue that the cause of the United States Government, "Union", is lost on many modern Americans.

Anyone seeking a clear, well-written, and easy-to-digest volume that spans the scope of the war and its central place in the history of the United States, should absolutely give this book their time. It is, arguably, the best single-volume history of the Civil War. Many thanks to Gary Gallagher and Joan Waugh for their contribution to the study of Civil War history, and helping to shape my understanding of the war.

Highly recommended for advanced graduate students, applied mathematicians and computer scientists in the field of public key cryptography. The mathematics is more advanced than in their first book on Elliptic Curve Cryptography.

Good compact book on elliptic curves in cryptography

This book gives a good summary of the current algorithms and methodologies employed in elliptic curve cryptography. The book is short (less than 200 pages), so most of the mathematical proofs of the main results are omitted. The authors instead concentrate on the mathematics needed to implement elliptic curve cryptography. The book is written for the reader with some experience in cryptography and one who has some background in the theory of elliptic curves. A reader coming to the field for the first time might find the reading difficult. The authors do give a brief summary in Chapter 1 on the idea of doing cryptography based on group theory. They then move on to discuss finite field arithmetic in Chapter 2. The reader is expected to know some of the basic notions of multiprecision arithmetic for integers. The authors choose to work with 2^16. Psuedocode is given for doing modular arithmetic with Montgomery arithmetic given special attention. The last section of the chapter gives a good summary of arithmetic in fields of characteristic 2. Chapter 3 discusses very compactly arithmetic in elliptic curves. This is where the reader should already have the background in the theory of elliptic curves, since the reading is very fast and formal. The authors do a good job of summarizing how modular polynomials come into play in elliptic curve cryptography and give some explicit examples of these polynomials. The most important chapter of the book is Chapter 4, where the authors give a discussion of how to implement elliptic curves efficiently in cryptosystems. This chapter is nicely written and pseudocode appears many times with lots of nice examples. This chapter serves as background for the next one on the discrete logarithm problem using elliptic curves over finite fields. The MOV attack, the anomalous attack, and the baby step/giant step methods are discussed very nicely. Random methods, such as the tame and wild kangaroo are discussed at the end of the chapter.
The next three chapters concentrate on how to actually generate elliptic curves for cryptosystems, with particular attention payed to the Schoof Algorithm. The chapter on Schoof's algorithm is more detailed than the rest of the chapters and this makes for better reading. The authors do discuss how to generate curves using complex multiplication although the discussion is somewhat hurried. The next chapter discusses how elliptic curves have been applied to other areas in cryptography, such as factoring, etc. A good discussion of the ECPP algorithm on proving primality ends the chapter. The authors end the chapter with a discussion of hyperelliptic cryptography. Anyone familiar with the theory of elliptic curves and how they are applied to cryptography will naturually ask if hyperelliptic curves have any advantages over the elliptic case. The authors never really address this explicity but do give examples on just what is involved in implementing hyperelliptic curves in cryptography. Overall a fine addition to the literature on elliptic curves in cryptography. One would hope that the authors would write a follow-up book on hyperelliptic curves and maybe on general algebraic curves and their possible use in this area.

Good for and additional references but not as an introduction

It is a good (classic) physiology textbook. I am an animal physiologist that wanted this to add to my collection. I wouldn't suggest it to someone new to the subject. If you are looking for an animal physiology book to introduce you to the most up-to-date topic I would chose Hill et al. Animal Physiology (as of this review they recently released the 4th edition).

A Great Physiology Text

This is one of, if not the, best comparative physiology text available. Don't let the 1992 publication date detour one from checking out this comprehensive text covering physiology across a wide range of animal classes. This text was a recommended text for an advanced physiology course in graduate school and I must say it is well worth the purchase. The best feature about this book is the wealth of information Withers has managed to fit into this text. The chapters are organized and read similar to primary review articles and utilize actual data from primary research journals to demonstrate key concepts in physiology. This however may also be a drawback to this text as well since many undergraduates are not familiar with information presented in this way and may find this text a bit challenging at first. That being said, this text does not read like an introductory text of physiology, but is well suited for upper level or graduate level courses in physiology. Provided one has some introductory background in physiology, this text should expand and enhance one's knowledge base of physiology quite well.

Schiff's revised version of his 1974 history of the Israeli Army includes additional chapters on Israeli's military intelligence services, its war against terrorism and the 1982 foray into Lebanon. There are two principal themes here: the performance of the army in Israel's wars and the relationship between the military and the government. Schiff is unsparing in his account of the bitter controversy over the politicization of the army, starting with the so-called War of the Generals, in which the role of Ariel Sharon is brought into clear focus. The author also writes frankly about the rift caused in Israeli society by "Operation Peace for Galilee" in 1982 and the loss of the army's prestige that resulted from that invasion. Photos. Very readable overview

This book is a short but very readable overview of not only the history of the IDF but also the history of modern Israel. Since the birth and development of the modern country of Israel is closely related to the military, by reading this book you get a good handle on the main aspects of how the country evolved from the kibbutzim and Aliyahs to the Yom Kippur War. Good book. I liked the earlier edition that had lots of pictures, maps and graphs but this newer edition has all the written information.
