Fact is stranger than fiction

I have noticed that Paul Quinn's excellent books have been sharply criticized as being based on no new information. Nevermind that he is one of the few people who really does the hard and much required work of studying the details of the British and American inquiries into the loss of the Titanic. Then, when Pellegrino comes along with books based on actual expedition research combined with nearly a half century of unpublished letters and collected diaries - the collection being the life's work of Walter Lord (one of America's most respected historians) - these same Quinn critics attack Pellegrino specifically because he presents information they have not read before. They claim, without investigating any further, that because it's not in the British or American inquiries it must be all made up. So you're damned if you do present new information, damned if you don't. It seems to me that new writers on the subject of Titanic just can't win for losing.
When I wrote to Pellegrino for information on Titanic survivors Edith Russell and Alfred White, he sent me copies of letters and memoirs. This does not seem to me like someone who is "making it all up." The stories may seem unbelievable, but that is precisely why the titanic stirs so many emotions. It is, as Pellegrino writes, "all the wondrous horror of a Greek tragedy penned by God with Shakespeare as his muse."

This unique and fascinating book goes beyond any TITANIC bookthat has ever been written. It is perhaps the most dramatic account of the sinking of the legendary "unsinkable" Cunard liner -- and of the incredible, science fiction-like finding of the ship.
"As ropes were unhooked and boat number fourteen struck out, portholes still glowed below the surface. From five feet under, in a room that was still unflooded, a man was peering out into the ocean. Adjacent portholes illumunated the white bottom of a lifeboat. Looking up, he watched it cast away..."
Time seemed to have come unstuck the day the TITANIC's grave was discovered. An empty lifeboat davit turned up on the robot ARGO's tv screens, and suddenly it was 1912 again, suddenly the horrors came spewing out like a nightmare from the past. Scientiests burst into tears, and many who saw those first pictures suffered what they later called minor nervous breakdowns. The world looked on, dumbfounded by the fallibility of man's suppsedly most invincible creations.
HER NAME, TITANIC includes a vivid portrait of explorer Robert Ballard, the brilliant leader of the expedition that discovered the TITANIC's remains. The author portrays Ballard and his crew in a compelling style unlike that of any other book on the subject. Charles Pellegrino is a scientist as well as an author, and he describes in riveting detail the scientific aspects of the machines and the processes involved in the expeditions.
But more than that, this is the first book to go beyond the headlines. By delving deep into the meaning of the TITANIC, which has evolved slowly from tragedy to symbol, and by putting himself into the minds of the people who play the characters in the drama. New Information for Titanic Enthusiasts

Those familiar with the work of Charles Pellegrino know that his writing always drifts from the distant past to the present to the distant future, connecting disparate circumstances together into a coherent "big picture" by way of entertaining discourses on paleontology, archeology, biology, and astrophysics, to name but a few of the fields Mr. Pellegrino has worked in. In "Her Name, Titanic", the disparate events in question are the sinking of the ocean liner Titanic in 1912 and its discovery on the ocean floor in 1985, as well as subsequent missions to document the Titanic's wreckage more fully. "Her Name, Titanic" presents previously unpublished information about the sinking of the Titanic in the form of fictionalized narratives and direct quotes from survivors, based on newly discovered (at the time of writing) diaries and communication logs. There is much discussion of the technology and accomplishments of deep sea exploration, including interviews with Bob Ballard and other members of the teams that discovered and explored the Titanic wreckage. I didn't like "Her Name, Titanic" as much as I usually like Charles Pellegrino's books. This book actually focuses on one subject more than most of his books do, which turned out not to be a good thing. I found Pellegrino's enthusiasm to be somewhat less infectious than usual, as the middle portion of the book bogged down with too much talk about deep sea submersibles. Of course, if this is your field of interest, you may find that part of the book fascinating. Titanic aficionados will be thrilled to read new accounts of what happened that night in April 1912. I give the new information 5 stars and the more tedious aspects of the book 3 stars, so 4 stars as a whole.

More of a Business Analysis Text

I think the key part of this book's title comes in "tools and techniques." It also say "a practical guide," and I'm not sure it's completely practical. One of the exercises early on in the book is to ask the reader (or student) to list all of the templates in Microsoft Project 2010. Wow, list the templates you can see by opening a program, one of many project programs and also one that is already outdated (2013 is the new release). That's a tool, barely practical--at least you don't the need the book for that.

Anyway, the book veers off to a myriad of decision analysis tools. These aren't really project management tools. In fact, I'm not sure really where they'd be applied except maybe if you were an auditor or maybe just a managerial consultant looking to analyze the costs and structure of an organization. These have value. I like the book. But I wouldn't give book this to a newly hired project manager or someone who is in another discipline and now will be managing a project. In the end, this feels like a good business evaluation book, just not a good project management book.

A Textbook with Very Specific Focus, Not a Good Book For Learning Various Aspects of PM

This book didn't have a whole lot of what I'd find useful in project management. It definitely is mainly about "tools" primarily meaning Microsoft Project, so if that's not what you use there's not going to be much here for you. You have to have a good knowledge of the Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK) going in, so definitely not for beginners to the field and you won't find anything here about actually managing and leading a team of people. It assumes the reader is in the field of IT and is geared entirely to that area. I found the writing very dry and hard to follow a lot of times. Ultimately this just isn't a book I personally found useful but for someone heavily into using Project to track their projects and is already well versed in the various aspects of PM, there may be some good information here.

This book was for my husband; this is his review of it. The book provides the fundamental tools of project management such as project selection, work breakdown structures, activity estimation, and schedules. What too many managers do not understand is that project management is all about dealing with people. The practical guide does not focus on the fact without good people skills, the tools will do nothing but help people document their failures. The appendix provides a significant number of project management template links that were quite helpful.

Use templates but get final validation from a lawyer.

If you are running a small business, you will definitely need some sort of agreements to use with your clients or vendors. This Nolo guide should be used in conjunction with another Nolo guide 'How to Create Noncompete Agreements' to have the best combination of contracts to protect yourself.
The first few chapters in the book outline both perspectives - hired consultant and client hiring the consultant. The chapters following these initial chapters focus on different kinds of situations like Agreements for Accounting and Bookkeeping Services, Agreements for Software Consultants (the one I started using right away), etc. These chapters basically outline the relevant contract and discuss the purpose of each clause in the contract along with their alternatives. You can then select the alternative that best suits your situation and modify the contract accordingly.
You will find the various sample agreements to be used by the hiring firm and by the independent contractor at the end of the book (and on the CD-ROM).
It took me all of 15 minutes to read the chapter on agreements for software consultants and highlight the clauses I wanted to modify. I spent an additional hour modifying the electonic version of the form and saving the file. After this, I emailed the electronic copy to my lawyer who charged me a much lower fee to check the contract! She basically found 3 errors I didn't know about and fixed them for me. I then sent the contract to my client to sign. Right there, the book paid for itself many times over!
But don't forget to combine this book with the other book on Noncompete Agreements. It is especially critical if you are the hiring firm. Good luck!

Is this what you really need.

This Nolo Book is getting a poor review only because its companion book "Working With Independent Contractors" was so good. This book is basically a limited reprint of the above cited book with a few additional specalized contracts. If you need those specalized contracts then this may be worth your money, otherwise get "Working With Independent Contractors" its great.

Great contracts for specific types of consultants

I got this book at the terrific used price just to get the consulting agreements. There are specific contracts for: household services; salespeople; accountants and bookkeepers; software consultants; creative contractors; construction contractors; and messengers, couriers and delivery people. This is on the CD too.

Rather than create my own service contracts from scratch, I have been able to use the agreements in this book with minimal editing. This saves time, attorney expenses and is more reliable than finding templates on the Internet. It's interesting to see the differences between the types of contracts. Also, the sections explaining consulting agreements cover the basic terms common to each type of agreement.

Because of the used price and usefulness of the included contracts, I easily recommend this book for those needing a consulting agreement.
