About the Author
Tula Pink designed her first fabric collection in her living room in L.A., after work and on weekends. The day she left her job in L.A., she sent her collection to Moda Fabrics and by the time she got to Albuquerque, it was in production. Tula was a Senior Designer with Moda, as well as having her own design label with them, producing the incredibly popular Neptune and Plume collections among others. She currently works with Free Spirit and received rave reviews on her recent Parisville and Prince Charming lines. Her fabrics are designed not just for quilting, but for a whole lifestyle of DIY-ers.

I have Tula Pink's other books and liked them very much so I was expecting this book would be equally as good. It isn't. The 100 blocks are not inspired, but rather boring. I feel this is more a showcase for her fabrics. The several quilts using the blocks are not up to her usual standards either. This book feels more like something to just keep the money rolling in and her name before the public. She can do better and I hope she does in the future. I won't be buying any more of her books without a good look through them first. I know I will be trashed for this honest opinion, but really, the book is not as good as her others. I buy lots of books from many different authors, some are always better than others. I am a fan of Modern Quilting as well as traditional quilting so am well read about both. Sorry Tula, but I will be happy to look at your next book! I did enjoy your pencil illustrations and can see you are a talented artist and would love to see more of your drawings.

Nothing new here.

After the originality of Tula's first book, this one comes as a HUGE letdown. The book consists of 100 photos of uninspired 6 inch blocks, each with a page of "instructions," and a small section in the back outlining several ways to make sampler quilts of the blocks. The block patterns are mostly simple, ordinary shapes that have been around for decades. The only thing "modern" about the blocks is that they are done up in Tula's line of fabric.

The most glaring omission from this book is how the blocks would appear in a quilt. Such as when multiples of one block are combined to make a quilt, or when combined with other blocks, or when used in creative arrangements of sashing, borders, or negative space. Inclusion of this type of information would have made this book more informative and inspirational. Tula's opening remarks for readers to make the blocks their own is no substitute for original content.

I am such a fan of Tula's work. Her first book was brilliant and got me quilting again after a long hiatus. This book just makes me want to hang up my rotary cutter.

City Sampler Rocks

Just got this from Amazon and love this book! There are great photos of each block as well as clear instructions on how to assemble them. Most of the blocks are very simple, not a lot of pieces, so very beginner friendly! No templates or special rulers needed, so no breaking the bank in trying to make this. If you are a more experienced quilter who likes challenging quilts, this probably is not for you. The blocks are small 6" finished, but very doable, especially if you go for all 100. What I love is there are several options for putting your quilt together, lap, twin, queen, king, without using all the blocks. Plus she has several color ways done in different settings, the possibilities are really endless. I'm an intermediate quilter, Tula Pink fan, who buys a lot of books and am so glad I got this one!

Too much filler

It was an okay book. If you're into fermentation at all then you're probably going to have seen most of the recipes already. Out of all the fermentation books I have this is probably the only one I wouldn't recommend having though honestly. Just not enough good recipes, and way too much extra sideline stuff. I bought this thinking it was more of a fermentation cookbook sort of deal, but that's really not what it is. It's pretty much just a collection of whatever the author felt like writing, circling it back around to fermentation in a roundabout way. Example, at one point the author gives a recipe, then goes on about how the recipe was given to them by a transgender and then going on a rant about gender identity. Half a page for a recipe, then a page and half of leftist pummeling. Keep in mind, I am a supporter of the LBGT community, but at the same time I don't buy a recipe book to get pummeled with propaganda. If you're looking for a light evening read, it's a good book, but if you're looking for a real fermentation cookbook with more of a professional scientific style to it, look somewhere else.

Takes us back to a better place............

I was needing to spend time in a waiting room at a hospital and took this with me, to pass the time. I actually started to read it, instead of thumbing through it. I really got what he was saying about how much we can benefit from preserving with fermentation, as in way back when before we had frig's, etc. I also was impressed with the fact that this is a healthy addition to our diets. I really do want to get back to basics and away from so much premade foods. You won't be disappointed. Also, the reviews that are complaining about his homo agenda.......... That is flat out, not the truth. These obviously are homophobic, rigid people that wrote the reviews. They obviously use any avenue to attack gays and this was just another way, trying to get people to not buy his book. He speaks of his Aids and the community he lives in but does not make that the focus, by no means. There was nothing inappropriate in this book. Many people speak of their health in food related books and the benefits of certain diets of foods. Enjoy. You won't be disappointed.

Great for anyone just starting out or wanting to go all-in, with ferments.

Good basic knowledge of fermentation using the wild yeasts (i.e. Not adding whey or starter culture to most ferments) and Sandor's storytelling is very entertaining. There are some recipes that are a tad complex for me but I look forward to trying many new things. If you are interested in this book, look for the Facebook group with the same name - lots of support and ideas!

The Standard of Care for Dental Office Medical Emergencies

This is the definitive textbook on medical emergencies in the dental office.

Dentists do not get a comprehensive medical education simply because there is no time for such a detailed education in the 4+ years of dental school. This book fills in the gap for the dental practitioner. The book is organized in such a fashion so that the dental staff learns to recognize a dental emergency early, and then according to specific algorithms, the appropriate treatment is rendered (until emergency staff arrives). Keeping the patient alive until emergency care arrives is the primary duty of the dental staff. Too many dentists buy an emergency kit full of emergency drugs (that they don't perhaps know how to use properly), yet somehow feel they are covered from liability. Having an emergency kit and not knowing how to use it actually creates more liability for the dental office.

This is a book that every dental professional should examine page by page from cover to cover until a firm understanding of recognizing medical emergencies is ingrained. I bought this copy so that I could review it each year, as one loses knowledge that is not used. Since medical emergencies (thankfully) do not happen each week or month, knowledge of medical emergency treatment slowly slips away like a leaky sieve. It has to be bolstered regularly, and fortunately, this is the book that the dental professional can rely upon to recognize dental/medical emergencies, and then render appropriate treatment. Once mastered, this book'sinformation will give the dentist and his/her staff confidence in treating virtually all medical emergencies that could happen in the dental environment. Dr. Stanley Malamed is the authority in this field, and his book is an absolute essential for every dental office. Better to have this book than a kit full of emergency medications!

This book is a really good review and reference to keep on hand. It also has full color flow charts and the new CPR guidelines indexed at the back. Great resource to have in any office, especially those that treat elderly patients, or provide IV sedation.

This Book May Save Lives

In “Saving Wild,” the 50 conservationists' easily-to-read, brief and to the point words on How to Stay Inspired are truly inspiring as well as educational. I learned many things about improving and saving the lives of animals around the world. For example, I had no idea there was an International Fund for Animal Welfare in China. In addition, Lori Robinson’s introductory bios for the conservationists were succinct and informative. Although the book is filled with wonderful writings, one conservationist, Colleen Begg, who currently focuses on African lions, said what I think we can all take to heart: “People can learn to care.” This book is an important accomplishment in that direction.

Don't binge-read; savour it slowly

Sometimes it’s hard not to feel disheartened in the face of climate change, biodiversity loss, overexploitation and wildlife trafficking. In ‘Saving Wild’ Lori Robinson has put together a collection of inspirational messages from conservationists and activists around the world. You’ll find thoughts on nature’s ability to bounce back, the need to live sustainably (starting in our own back yard), and why living in a world without wildlife is too awful to contemplate. Perhaps my favourite contribution is from author Will Stolzenburg, who says, “My formula for keeping hope in a world of despair is to step away from the keyboard, pick up the binoculars and walk out the door.” Because only by appreciating nature and wilderness can we care enough to protect it.
This isn’t a book to binge-read; rather savour it slowly, dipping in to one or two comments a day and taking time to absorb the message.

this book is for those of you who are working to make a difference in the world, and are discouraged at times due to a feeling that it is uphill battle. the wisdom from these amazing 50 environmentalists about what inspires them, in the face of the discouragement, has the power to completely change your worldview to one of empowerment and to re-enegergize your efforts -- it certainly has mine. this wisdom is timely, as many of us feel that we are at a tipping point with regard to the state of the planet.

ultimately, this book won't make you more committed, as most of us can't imagine doing anything else, but it will certainly inspire you in ways that
are uniquely orchestrated for you.

THE introduction to Processing!

Once upon a time, far too many years ago to think about, I was a young nerd at school. I loved the sciences, but I also loved the arts and for a while that was fine. The trouble was once I hit that point where they start giving you careers talks I had to make a decision as to whether I was going to be an arts person or a sciences person. It was a strictly binary choice, no shades of grey allowed. I went the sciences route but I’ve always rather pined for the arts. Things are improving and now there’s a burgeoning community of tech-artists who blend the best that art and digital tools have to offer and one of the digital tools finding favour is Processing.

If Processing is new to you, it’s an open source programming language and environment developed for use by designers and artists. It’s used in both video arts and as a tool in producing interactive installations. The language itself is built on Java (though a much simplified version) and was used as a basis for the Arduino programming environment, so if you’ve used either of these you will find it familiar. Whether it’s completely new or not The Sparkfun Guide To Processing is well worth a look.

The book is project driven and split into 14 chapters each with its own project, which gives you something to show at the end of each one. (You can download the code samples in the book via https://www.nostarch.com/sparkfunprocessing but I think that you get a better learning experience if you type it in and debug your errors, yourself.) The chapters follow the same structure: an introduction to the topic; an overview of the Processing concepts to be used; a walk through the project code and finally some pointers on how to extend the project. So far, so traditional. Where the book really shines is in its explanations of the conceptual underpinnings of the Processing language. I’ve used Processing a bit before and have some more in depth books on the language but this one clearly explains some of the underlying principles that I had failed to wrap my head around; there were more than a few eureka moments. I’m firmly of the opinion that you can do much more with a sound grounding in the principles of a language than just by knowing the syntax so this book really worked for me.

Content-wise, you get a pretty thorough grounding in what you need to get started. The book starts with installation and drawing simple images before moving onto dynamic and interactive art. From there it moves onto slightly more complex areas such as working with text, processing images and manipulating video. Part of the utility of Processing is not just what it can do out of the box but also using the copious available libraries, working with external data sources and connecting it to other pieces of hardware. These are covered by projects using the Minim sound library, reading and using JSON format data and interfacing with Arduino.

Of course no book is perfect and there are a few minor quibbles with The Sparkfun Guide To Processing. Firstly, and perhaps most importantly, there’s a big strip across the back saying “Covers Processing 2”; Processing is now in version 3. In all fairness, the first full release of Processing 3 was after the book’s release, but it has been in beta for a while now. This shouldn’t be a problem as everything in the book seems to work with Processing 3; but it may put off some users who might think that they are buying an obsolete product. Secondly the coverage of object oriented programming is scant to the point of being non-existent. There is an excellent description of what classes and objects are but you never actually write either, which is missing a powerful part of the language. You don’t actually need to write in an object oriented way to get things done in Processing but it does make things easier when you work with larger and more complex programs. Finally, some of the final chapter on hooking processing up to an Arduino is specific to a Sparkfun product (perhaps not unreasonably as this is The Sparkfun Guide To Processing) but I would have preferred to see it address the vanilla Arduino board.

Quibbles aside, this is the best introduction to Processing I’ve seen. In fact I may go as far as to say it’s the best introduction to any programming language I’ve seen. It’s clear, concise and engagingly written. If you thinking about getting into digital art then this book definitely deserves a place on your bookshelf.

In summary, all I can say is arty nerdy types rejoice; someone’s got your back! Bravo for No Starch Press; bravo for Sparkfun and most of all bravo for Derek Runberg.

"The SparkFun guide to Processing" is a project-based book for the Processing language. Processing is a Java-based programming language that runs on Linux, Windows and Mac OSX with which one can manipulate images, draw graphics on computer screens, even communicate with Arduino microcontrollers. The book is organized like a technological cookbook where each chapter's recipe builds on the lessons learned from the previous one. Much of the material is culled from a class the author taught to middle schoolers and one could definitely see it being used even in an introductory college class or in a community "Maker" course. The book is a well-written collaboration between No Starch Press and SparkFun Electronics and its usage of graphics and code make it, quite frankly, a gorgeous technology book worth having.

Great Resource for Teachers and Hobbyists interested in STEAM and Maker Movement

Derek has created a great resource for the classroom teacher or "maker". I teach a digital art class to high schoolers. One of my goals is to encourage my art students to create interactive and kinetic artwork utilizing coding and robotics. This book is a GREAT resource for anyone who wants to explore these topics. It is written simply (good mix of technical descriptions and verbiage that is approachable to the complete beginner). This can be used as a text book that your students can work independently and develop their knowledge in their own way.
