Rafal Kuc

Rafal Kuc is a born team leader and software developer. Currently, he is working as a consultant and a software engineer at Sematext Group, Inc., where he concentrates on open source technologies, such as Apache Lucene, Solr, Elasticsearch, and the Hadoop stack. He has more than 13 years of experience in various software branches―from banking software to e-commerce products. He is mainly focused on Java but is open to every tool and programming language that will make the achievement of his goal easier and faster. Rafal is also one of the founders of the solr.pl website, where he tries to share his knowledge and help people with their problems related to Solr and Lucene. He is also a speaker at various conferences around the world, such as Lucene Eurocon, Berlin Buzzwords, ApacheCon, Lucene Revolution, and DevOps Days. He began his journey with Lucene in 2002, but it wasn't love at first sight. When he came back to Lucene in late 2003, he revised his thoughts about the framework and saw the potential in search technologies. Then came Solr, and that was it. He started working with Elasticsearch in the middle of 2010. Currently, Lucene, Solr, Elasticsearch, and information retrieval are his main points of interest. Rafal is the author of Solr 3.1 Cookbook, its update―Solr 4.0 Cookbook―and its third release―Solr Cookbook, Third Edition. Marek Rogozinski

Marek Rogozinski is a software architect and consultant with over 10 years of experience. He specializes in solutions based on open source search engines, such as Solr and Elasticsearch, and software stack for Big Data analytics, including Hadoop, Hbase, and Twitter Storm. He is also a cofounder of the solr.pl website, which publishes information and tutorials about Solr and Lucene libraries. He is the coauthor of Mastering ElasticSearch, ElasticSearch Server, and Elasticsearch Server Second Edition, both published by Packt Publishing. An indispensable book for professionals who manage and maintain Elasticsearch servers for a living

First off, a disclaimer for newbies: This book is meant for intermediate users of the Elasticsearch Server. Still, the book begins with a short but comprehensive introduction to the basic concepts used in document indexing, the various node types in Elasticsearch and the Apache Lucene library that powers Elasticsearch under the hood. The examples in the book are based on the premise that the user is running an online bookstore which is a powerful way to explore the possibilities offered by Elasticsearch. The examples are in JSON document format which should be familiar to any serious developer. The score of a query determines how well the document matches the input query. The scoring formula is explained using a
simple example to demonstrate how it works in practice. Query rewrite methods, filters and types of queries are explained in detail with a special focus on their performance impact. Simple use cases let the readers know when to use which query group. A new sandboxed scripting language called Groovy is introduced that enables on-the-fly calculation of document scores without compromising the security of the search server. Lucene expressions are also given a brief touch. Readers will enjoy the chapter on improving search suggestions which can make a real difference in the search experience of users. Plenty of examples in this chapter help to take the guesswork out of improving query relevance. Filtering garbage results and using term faceting to narrow down search results are discussed to give readers the power to tailor their websites according to their needs for maximum user satisfaction. Scaling to accommodate increasing demands requires the right amount of shards and replicas. Deciding this amount is explored with a practical routing example. The final few chapters deal with low level index control, Elasticsearch administration, performance improving techniques and developing Elasticsearch plugins. whether you have a single node or an entire cluster of nodes in the cloud, the sheer amount of information contained in over 400 pages of this book ensures that readers will find this book a worthy companion in their quest to tame and tune Elasticsearch server for blazing fast query speed and highly relevant search results.

Very useful book for ElasticSearch users

I've been using ElasticSearch professionally for over 6 months - our first version product using ElasticSearch has shipped this week!

Whilst it is fairly easy to get started with ElasticSearch, there are a lot of fundamental aspects to it (and its underpinnings) which can have a dramatic affect on using it. And, whilst there are some good examples, they tend to be fairly simplistic.

Up until I got this book I'd been (extensively!!) relying on Google. And whilst I've eventually managed to work out the answers, it took a lot of searching and therefore a lot longer than I'd have ideally liked. In addition, finding individual snippets on the web doesn't help with some of the broad knowledge.

I found this book to be an excellent guide to help me understand the underpinnings of ElasticSearch, and also helped me to make many improvements in my Google-aquired knowledge. I would recommend it to anyone how is spending any amount of time with ElasticSearch.

Insights on Personality, Development, Nature vs Nurture

This is one of the best compilations of Ellen White's writings on a specific subject. This book shows that Ellen White (1827-1915) was way ahead of her times in the area of psychology. Even before psychology had become acceptable science, she had experience with the basic fundamentals of psychology and sociology. This book should be required reading for all Christians who work with people, whether you are a parent, teacher, pastor, counselor, social worker or whatever.
Ellen White had amazing insights in the area of personality traits and personality development, the issue of nature and nurture in character formation, mental health, and behavioral modification. While I'm sure she might have reflected some of the current thinking of her times, she still was ahead of her time considering the fact that a lot of the issues she dealt very well with were confirmed by the sciences a century later.
Volume 1 (which is what I've read so far) deals with the study of the mind, how religion helps the mind, emotions, prenatal influence on character formation, parental influence, nature vs. nurture, love, infatuation, sexuality, self-respect, dependence and independence (an important topic), guilt, doubt, marriage, principles of motivation, and principles of education, study and learning.
UPDATE: I previously had doubts about the idea of "prenatal influence on character formation." This was written at the turn of the century, and it certainly did not sound very scientific. BUT, I just attended a panel discussion at Notre Dame between biologists and ethicists, and a study was described that proves that there apparently is a prenatal influence on character formation. Ellen White was way ahead of her time!

Mind, Character and Personality

This is an execellent book. The author is truly inspired by God. She addresses practically every conflict or controversy that may arise in life. Anywhere from concerns of the roles of a husband and wife in a marriage to how a single person can survive as a Christian or, even how diet effects an individual's mind and spirit. I had searched high and low for this publication. After reading a friend's copy I had to purchase my own personal copy. I think every Christian should have this book as part of their home library.

About the Author

Miles Craven has a diploma in TEFLA from Bell Cambridge, United Kingdom. He has over twenty years' experience in English language teaching, as a teacher, teacher-trainer, examiner and materials writer. He has taught students in private language schools, British Council centers and universities, in Italy, Portugal, Spain, Hong Kong, Japan and the UK. Miles is author or co-author of several courses. He has written many articles and online materials, and regularly presents at conferences and workshops. Miles also helps coordinate the Business English Programme at the Møller Centre, Churchill College, University of Cambridge. His research focuses on developing skills and strategies to help learners improve their reading, listening and speaking ability.

Kristin D. Sherman holds a Masters in Education, TESL, from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. She has taught ESL at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC for more than fifteen years, and has taught a variety of subjects, including grammar, listening/speaking, reading and composition. She has written several student books, teachers editions and workbooks in the area of academic ESL/EFL. In addition, she has delivered trainings internationally on ESL/ELL methodology.

I LOVED this second installment of Kayla Howarth's YA dystopian The ...

I LOVED this second installment of Kayla Howarth's YA dystopian The Institute trilogy. I will try to keep this review spoiler free, but, if you haven't read The Institute yet, you should go read it immediately instead of this review.

Resistance picks right up where the first book left off: Drew and Allira are now agents for the Institute and have been sent out on a mission to arrest a Defective named Licia. But, as we found out at the end of The Institute, there's a resistance brewing in the outback, composed of a relatively small group of Defectives and non-Defective sympathizers. Among them are Allira's parents, Allira's boyfriend Chad and his mother, and Paxton, Brookfield's double-crossing right-hand man. Allira and a reluctant Drew soon join their compound, where they receive further training and try to find their place in the community. As part of the resistance, Allira grows as a fighter and a leader. She begins to realize that, in their fight for freedom, she may have to make some tough choices and sacrifices and wonders if, when the time comes, she'll be able to do it.

I love watching Allira grow as a young woman in this series, becoming a stronger and more independent person and accepting responsibility. She's able to see the bigger picture and make decisions accordingly, putting aside personal feelings and gain. I really grew to love many of the characters in The Institute and Resistance--Chad, Allira's brother Shilah, Tate, and Paxton, just to name a few. Ms. Howarth has also done a good job of making the rebel movement feel very authentic. A few members of the resistance are very selfish and don't really seem to have the best interests of the Defectives in mind, which I think is realistic. We don't have "good guys" and "bad guys," we have people with individual motives and interests that sometimes align with the side their fighting for--but sometimes don't.

Okay, so I guess personally I'm a little disappointed that the inkling of a love triangle I thought I detected in The Institute isn't really what's happening in this series, but I guess that's okay. I know everyone (except me) is sick of them, and I applaud the author for breaking away from this trend.

Really, the only thing that bothered me about the book was Drew in the beginning. He's still mostly the character leaving both Allira and the reader uncertain of whether to trust him or not, and I like that aspect. I just felt like he went along with Allira and the resistance a little too easily when they first joined up. Even if he always had that side to him that questioned the Institute, he's been brainwashed during his time there and has been working as an agent for them. I thought he would have put up more of a fight and that the resistance would have been a lot more wary of him.

I'm sure some people will be annoyed at something that happens at the end of Resistance. I thought I would be more bummed than I was, lol, but maybe that's because I sort of saw it coming. I had read too many reviews before I read the book, I knew something was going to happen, and I had already kind of guessed who it was going to happen to. I had already emotionally prepared myself, haha. Anyway, it was sad, but it didn't make me hurl my computer across the room.

In summary, Resistance is a satisfying, thrilling YA read that you won't be able to put down. The other day, I remembered another YA dystopian-type series I had read in high school by another Australian author--Tomorrow, When the War Began. It was one of my favorites, and I'd say The Institute trilogy will rank right up there with it. In the back of the book, it says that the third installment, Defective, is due out in November 2015, and I can't wait!!!

The Resistance is a worthy sequel to The Institute, better in almost every way. And The Institute was really good!

The Resistance is a solid follow-up to The Institute. We pick up Allira's story several months after the end of The Institute, where she is working with Drew to round up other "defectives" for the Institute. But as we learned at the end of The Institute, an underground Resistance is doing their own recruiting and they want Allira. The problem is, Shilah and Tate are still at the Institute and her allegiances are pulling her apart. She'd love nothing more than to bring down the Institute, but not at the cost of her brother and best friend.

Plot
The plot is intriguing, drawing me in as I learned more about the mysterious Resistance and who is calling the shots, what the Institute is really up to and who's behind it, and what Allira's future has in store for her. There are a lot of layers here, all seamlessly woven in, with more than a couple of twists I never saw coming.

World Building
The author deepens the world building in this second go-round, providing further clues to the underpinnings of both the Resistance and the Institute. The world is a bleak place in her dystopian vision, dark and suffocating at times, but with a peek at blue sky promises, if only they survive long enough to experience it.

Characters
There is more character development in The Resistance as Allira comes to terms with her fate, uncovers some surprising information about her past, and embraces her feelings for the important people in her life. Drew also goes through a transformation, but I never quite knew where he stands, which makes him still one of my favorite characters in the series.

Top Five Things I Enjoyed About The Resistance
1. The Ending. Once again the ending was not what I expected. It caught me off guard and slammed me into a wall, making me gasp for breath and beg for more!

2. Drew. He continues to evade stereotype. He refuses to allow me to either love or hate him. Instead, he pushes me away, only to pull me back in like a co-dependent lover. Can't wait to see what happens with him in the next book.

3. The Twists. I love when an author can shock me, particularly when the plot twist is a natural evolution of the story.

4. Shate or Tailah. Not sure of the best "ship" name for this couple, but they are adorable.

5. Allira's Determination. Even when she's put in the worst situations, she manages to grit her teeth and find a way to persevere.

Bottom Line
The Resistance is a worthy sequel to The Institute, better in almost every way. And The Institute was really good!

I absolutely loved Resistance by Kayla Howarth. It’s the second book in her The Institute trilogy and it’s one of those stories that just gets better and better the more you read. By the end of the book, I was turning pages (or tapping them on my nook) so fast that I was really mad when I got to the end because I was going to have to wait a little while for book three. You know those books that get your heart racing? The kind where you think about the characters even when you aren’t reading? That is Resistance.
Allira and Drew have left the institute to become outside agents, tracking and arresting “defective” people that the world now sees as a blight on society. Well, part of the world. There is a resistance building near the radiation zones. Their mission is to fight for the freedoms of those with “abilities”, many of whom have joined their cause. At least, that is what Allira is told is their mission when she joins up.
See, Allira has a secret about her ability. A secret that the resistance will use if they find out. There’s a faction within these new allies that can’t be trusted, even when it comes to saving one of their leaders, Allira’s best friend. Can she do it without them? Will she have to do it without them? What is the cost of Allira’s secret and what is the cost of her new mission?
These questions are answered in the quick, nail biting style that I love about Ms. Howarth. The characters are well developed and easy to love or to hate. We are given a hero we can all relate to. She isn’t perfect but she is driven, brave, and loyal to a fault. Who doesn’t love that?

Demystifing the Shamanic World

I have never written a review before but have been prompted to do so after reading Follow the Shaman's Call. I love this book.

Something magical happens just in the reading of it. Mike accompanies you on a variety of journeys, leading you with his gentle wisdom. It is very clear that this man not only knows his stuff but has experienced the shamanic path over time and distance. At the beginning of each chapter there is a little vignette/story which transports you to another world and another time allowing you a firsthand glimpse of the shamanic world - then in the chapter he takes you under his wing as he guides you with practical, down to earth structures for working safely and powerfully in a shamanic way.

This book is a smooth read - it is well written, extensively researched and delightfully executed. I found it all encompassing and grounded in ancient wisdom. I have great respect for Mike, his wisdom, inclusivity, humility and gentle power. Whether you are just dipping your toe into the shamanic world for the first time or are a seasoned traveller this book is an informative, empowering and enjoyable companion.

I can't wait for the next book - which I think is coming out soon !

An eye-opener to a new spiritual path

I had known very little about shamanism prior to reading this book and I chose it for review expressly for the purpose of learning more. I'm glad I did because I think this could be a book that could help me fill a spiritual void I've had for years.

For as long as I can remember I've had an outsider's view of organized religion. My dad's an atheist and my mom's agnostic. When I was 11-ish I was given a choice to go to CCD (both were raised Roman Catholic in Old Vatican practices). Even at that impressionable age, when all of my friends were going to CCD, I said no because even then I knew it would be a waste of my time. I didn't care for "that type" of religion. Of course I was made fun of. I even had a few kids tell me to my face I was going to hell. It didn't bother me even then.

So ever since I've been trying to seek out some kind of spiritual path and I would find aspects of more pagan religions appealing but I never actively considered joining any of them. I wanted something organic, more natural and pre-historic than anything rumbling around currently. For a while it was mixing around those Pagan religions but nothing really called to me. I have my beliefs but they never really fit into anything specific so I've just been going on with my life as is.

Then I picked up this book to read and all of a sudden it clicked. This is it. Williams does an excellent job of describing just what Shamanism is, how to go about practicing it and just what kind of life you'll lead as a shaman. He doesn't pander, he doesn't pull punches. He just tells it like it is and I really liked that. The way he described journeying to the Otherworlds had me wanting to go buy a drumming CD and try it out for myself, despite how afraid it actually makes me.

It's a religion as natural as you can possibly get without the confines of organization or the baggage that comes along with it. There are no stringent requirements, no elevation or shunning of other people. There's just you and nature and that's pretty much it and that's what I like about it.

I plan on using this book as sort of my beginner's guide to shamanism. It's a good tool if you're just starting out and not sure where to step first. It gives you a little bit of information in a lot of areas of shamanism without being overwhelming or confusing. I found it immensely helpful and I plan on making it wholly dog-eared by the time I'm done with it.

If you're interested in delving into a new (well, really old) and natural religion, Follow the Shaman's Call is definitely a good place to start.

Great Addition To Any Shamanic Library!

I loved this book as it combined the historical background of Ancient Shamanic Teachings with the first hand experience of the Author and his contemporaries. There are well explained methods and exercises which are interwoven with lovely anecdotes that bring them alive, making them usable in today's modern society.

The style is informal and knowledgeable without ever patronising the reader and I feel it would be a great introduction for the beginner to gain an overview of Shamanism as well as being a welcome addition to any Shamanic library for the more experienced practitioner.

Pirates and demons

RA Salvatore has made a distinguished career with his Forgotten Realms stories, particularly those centering on the drow elf Drizzt Do'Urden.

And with his son Geno Salvatore, he makes a decent effort at a young adult novel in "The Stowaway: Stone of Tymora Book 1." It's a resolutely middle-of-the-road story that doesn't really have a conclusion, despite a few moments of lyricism in its descriptions. And it really helps to be a longtime reader of Salvatore's prior works.

A young orphan is captured by pirates, and tells the captain his story: pursued by a malevolent demon, he stowed away on a ship and encountered the drow elf Drizzt Do'Urden and his companions.

Then the narrative takes a backward leap, exploring the boy's formative years -- he was raised by a forest witch, and passed on to the mysterious wandering warrior Perrault. Perrault was determined to keep the boy -- whom he named Maimun -- safe from all harm, and to give him a magical stone that was his by right.

Unfortunately, with the stone comes an old enemy -- the evil demon Asbeel, a shapeshifting creature who is after both Maimun and his magical stone. And when Perrault is badly injured in battle, Maimun flees into the world of the high seas, unsure where to go or what to do. And wherever he goes, there are enemies pursuing him.

Most young-adult spinoffs of a series try to serve as an introduction in themselves, letting new readers understand what this universe is and what's going on. Unfortunately, the two Salvatores sort of let this slide -- the entire book is full of people and places that seem very significant, but whose lives and roles are never really explained.

And Geno Salvatore spin up a straightforward yarn with some chilling moments (the scaly troll who talks like Gollum), lots of chases and fights, and lyrical language ("All I could see was two point of burning lavender flame"). Unfortunately there's little actual plot in "The Stowaway," since most of it involves Maimun racing frantically from A to B, hanging out for awhile and then having to rush to C and D. And it ends on a big fat "To Be Continued."

Maimun himself is a rather typical fantasy boy-hero -- he has no idea what's going on, and he struggles to merely keep himself alive and to hold onto his despised Item of Power. But he becomes somewhat less sympathetic at the midway point, when he abandons a dying father-figure to save himself, and only feels remorse a few days after.

And despite Drizzt's appearance on the cover, his presence is completely disposable -- he merely travels on the same ship as Maimun for a few days, and dispenses some Yodalike wisdom. That's all. He and his companions don't really play any part in the story.

"The Stowaway: Stone of Tymora Volume 1" is only a warmup with a Drizzt cameo -- it has potential, but little more. Here's hoping the rest of the story is a bit more gripping.
