A Solid Blueprint for Non-fiction

This is indeed a solid blueprint for creating a non-fiction book. My biggest issue is that non-fiction isn't in the title and that point should be made clearer. That being said the information in this book is laid out in a very followable and approachable fashion. The author begins with a little dive into your experiences. The outcome being you know more than you think. I'm sure it can be argued that the information provided may not be revolutionary but the breakdowns and explanations for me were very nicely laid out and I believe the author does a fine job using his conversational style to stimulate the reader into achievable actions. And isn't that the point. To begin, and take that first step and feel you can write a book. I would certainly purchase the fiction version of this if it were available.

Overall very worthwhile, but forgot to put the real link in for a resource promised in the book

This book has some good ideas, especially for writing non-fiction. In fact, one of them about watching trends and writing about your personal experience with something popular is one I've used before that allowed me to bring in six figures from one book for two years in a row, so he does know what he's talking about.

That being said, I am taking off one star because he made a mistake with regard to attention to detail. He put in a placeholder XXXXXXXXXXXXXX for a link to his mind map for writing a book in the chapter on outlining. However, he forgot to go back and put the real link in.

What I have done in the past to avoid this problem is to use a product like the Easy Redirect Script plug-in, which allows me to make a link ahead of time, even to an Amazon page for the book I am writing, which does not have a page on Amazon yet. Then when the book is published, I point the redirect link in the plug-in to the Amazon page once it is live. That means that I don't have to republish the book to have a live link that works (as this author will need to do), all because I used the plug-in to create the link ahead of time. This is a tip anyone can use that wants to use links in books they are writing, so I hope it helps all you aspiring writers to be more efficient.

Helpful and to the Point

I thought this book was filled with a lot of great information to help you go from a concept to completed book. I like anything that tries to break things down to least common denominator so that I can follow along step by step. I have not tried writing anything nonfiction yet but I have been thinking about it for a while. Next month I plan on sitting down and following the steps in this book to see if I can actually get something completed. Though as a fiction writer, I will many of the methods he uses can be used for fiction as well. The outline of course for your book won't be the same and neither will idea generation but for marketing, building a list, getting reviews, etc the concepts can easily be switched over.

I also really like the fact that he tells you that you will actually need to do some work. This isn't a magical formula that will suddenly have a book written for you in your sleep (Gosh I wish, if someone finds one please let me know). If you have any problems with outlining out your work then the writing method itself probably won't work for you but it does have a lot of other great resources for getting your book to do well on Amazon.

Upon reading through the book I had some small problems with it that kind of are pet peeves for me which is why I am giving it four stars. I expect every book to have one or two errors and this one was no exception. Some of the things that irked me include when he mentions you being able to get a link to a mind map for this book (this is part of his system for helping you write a bunch of words in an hour) and it says find the link here XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX literally just a bunch of Xs instead of a link. From what I can tell it is a free gift for buying the book so the link itself isn't actually in the book. Instead you need to follow the instructions for the free gift to get which is fine, but it should be mentioned at that part instead of saying the Xs. I also disliked that the first time he mentions one of his marketing techniques, he says he mentioned earlier when in fact he never mentioned it earlier. I read the book twice and unless it is just completely slipping by me I would have appreciated a general overview of the method instead of a link to his other product. Great product, but the general technique not clearly explained in the book and the same point that he mentions it so I think you could be confused by what he is talking about unless you are already familiar with it from his other stuff (which I am).

Overall I think it was a great buy and that Mr. Castleman has an easy, reproducible system in place that a beginner could follow.

The definition of a wound is, “an experience that produces pain or even trauma which creates a memory and a sense of loss, regret or even death of some kind.” Wounds can either be self-inflicted or can be inflicted by other people or unfortunate situations. Throughout the book, Dr. Jones identifies all the areas of one’s life where wounds can come from and the forms in which they take on, i.e. divorce, molestation, abandonment, abuse, anger, etc. Such wounds create corresponding behaviors which the book addresses as “wound behaviors.” While some wound behaviors are obvious, some behaviors are more subtle. A select few, who are wounded, can connect the dots between their obvious or not so obvious wounds and the wound behaviors they act out. Yet, others have a difficult time connecting the dots and do not understand why they are acting out these wound behaviors, and subsequently have a hard time excepting the truth when they hear it. Therefore, Dr. Mark Jones walks the reader through the process of identifying wound behavior patterns and instructs on how to remove destructive patterns and replace them with the right, productive ones. Unfortunately, it is impossible to go through one’s entire life and not experience wounds. Unless you purposefully and intentionally resolve such wounds, they will remain and push their way out in the form of some kind of mindset, emotion, and/or behavior. Walking Wounded encourages the reader to examine their life and reach out for professional help rather than attempt to resolve everything by themselves. Dr. Mark Jones, LMFT is a leader in the field of mental health and restorative therapy, and the founder and owner of Liberty Alliance Group - a private therapy practice located in San Antonio, TX consisting of licensed and certified faith based counselors and therapists.  He has been a Licensed Therapist since 1992 as well as an ordained minister. Dr. Jones offers individual, family and group therapy in his San Antonio practice as well as seminars, work shops and grief recovery from personal loss and even trauma. He is also a Continuing Education provider to other licensed professionals. About the Author
Primo Levi was born in Turin in 1919 and trained as chemist. Arrested a member of the anti-fascist resistance during the war, he was deported to Auschwitz. His experiences there are described in his two classic autobiographical works, IF THIS IS A MAN and THE TRUCE.

Heart-breaking but informative and important

A truly amazing book - I cannot promise that you will enjoy it, in fact I can almost guarantee that you will find most of it heart-breaking and painful.

It is a little like watching Kieslowski's A Short Film About Killing - on many levels you do not enjoy it but it enthrals you. The subject matter is so important and it is so beautifully made and eloquent that you feel compelled to watch (or read in the case of Levi).

Levi tells the story of his own internment in Auschwitz - he concentrates on the details of everyday life slowing building a vivid picture of how the Nazis were intent on not just killing them but breaking their spirit, humiliating them, degrading them. He captures many moments so well that they live on in the mind, for example when he describes how the terrible regime made Jew turn on Jew. He even manages to raise a guilty smile occasionally. For example, he describes the second worst thing that could happen at night was to take out the toilet bucket as it was always full to overflowing and would spill on your feet. The worst thing was when your bunkmate took it out as they shared bunks sleeping head to toe.

Levi is a fantastic writer (try the Periodic Table if you want to read something easier and more enjoyable) with a light touch. He describes his time in Auschwitz calmly, clearly, with great compassion but remarkably objectively; he gives the reader space to think and understand.

Primo Levi is the most insightful, pragmatic realist of all holocaust authors. I have read more than 50 books on the subject, and his insights into what happened, human nature, the (bad) luck of the draw, and the tragedy of his experience are brilliant and by far the most articulate. Somehow, perhaps with his scientific mind, Levi was able to maintain his awareness through an experience that is utterly beyond the scope of imagination. He somehow emerges from the ashes of this horrific epoch like a literary phoenix. He doesn't dwell on the inhuman acts and suffering, although he has a perfect right to do so, but instead offers his account almost from an omniscient perspective. This book contains the best of Primo Levi, but his other writings demand to be read as well. And, if you haven't seen The Truce, starring John Turturro, you should do so. It's not a hundred percent historically accurate, but it is a great presentation.

Primo Levi's "If This is a Man" and "The Truce" remain one of the most horrifyingly realistic depictions of life in Auschwitz. Primo Levi recounts the daily ordeals of life in Auschwitz with a stirring and poignant narration, concentrating on not only the physical and emotional hardship but on another level questioning plainly what it is to be human. Both books present an illuminating view into life in a prison camp, and Primo Levi's narration ensure that no suffering remains untold. An illuminating read.

About the Author
MARTIN L. LEIBOWITZ is Managing Director on the U.S. Equity Strategy team at Morgan Stanley. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley in 2004, he was vice chairman and chief investment officer of TIAA-CREF. Leibowitz is a leading authority in the fields of security analysis and overall portfolio allocation strategies. He is the author of four books, including Franchise Value (Wiley), and 138 articles, ten of which have won the prestigious Graham and Dodd Award for excellence in financial writing. Leibowitz serves on a number of endowment and foundation investment committees, including Harvard University, University of Chicago, Rockefeller Foundation, Carnegie Corporation, and the Institute for Advanced Study.

SIMON EMRICH is Head of Quantitative and Derivative Strategies North America at Morgan Stanley. Most recently, he has worked on issues related to alpha-beta separation and the optimization of alpha views in a benchmark-relative portfolio context, as well as on the implications of the quant meltdown during the second half of 2007. He holds degrees from the London School of Economics and Université Catholique de Louvain, in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium.

ANTHONY BOVA, CFA, is a vice president with Morgan Stanley Equity Research's Global Strategy team, focusing on institutional portfolio strategy. Prior to his current role, Bova spent four years covering commodity chemicals at Morgan Stanley. Leibowitz and Bova recently received the ninth annual Bernstein Fabozzi/Jacobs Levy Awards for coauthoring "Gathering Implicit Alphas in a Beta World," cited as the best paper in the 2007 Journal of Portfolio Management.
