About the Author
John Watts is fellow and tutor in History at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He has written extensively on politics, government and political culture in later medieval Britain and Europe. His main books are Henry VI and the Politics of Kingship (Cambridge, 1996), The Making of Polities: Europe, 1300 1500 (Cambridge, 2009), and an edited collection, The End of the Middle Ages? (1998). He is currently writing a volume in the New Oxford History of England series, entitled Renaissance England, 1461 1547.

This little black book is all that you need to ACE the CIPP

I purchased this study guide and have no regrets. If you read and follow the instruction as to how to effectively utilize this study guide, you will ace the exam. The sample questions are structured like the questions on the exam and prepare you far better than the questions on the Practice Exam offered by IAPP. This little book is all you need to ace the exam.

This is a must have supplement to the CIPP foundation ...

This is a must have supplement to the CIPP foundation text book!! The CIPP text book - is really that - it's a text book - it has details and minutiae with references to research if you wanted to learn about a specific topic. This book by John Watts, however, is a study guide. It summarizes the four topical areas - tells you which ones to focus on. he has tips on the terms to learn on the glossary that is published by IAPP. There is a ton of practice test questions - with explanations on the answers - which teaches you the concepts. This is a must have in order to pass the CIPP foundation exam. I do have to warn you that there are some obvious typos (e.g. FRCA - should be FCRA) - but overlook those, because you know they are typos (does not cause any confusion on the concepts you need to learn) - this study guide is worth every penny!

The US portion of the book was very useful. Note, this book isn't a self-contained study aid - it serves more as a tutor with directions on what to review, research, know. This is why I gave it four stars (I deducted a star because the book isn't entirely clear that the IAPP certification process has changed and much of the data on "foundations" isn't necessary). Each chapter addresses a different topic covered on the CIPP exam and where to look on the IAPP website for more information & definitions. The questions are spot on. The answers provided are helpful, albeit you may wish to use IAPP's guides to supplement. Note for lawyers: unlike real life where lawyers would commit malpractice if they relied on memory for key dates and/or code specifics - the IAPP exam requires you to memorize every detail. So memorize, memorize, memorize. The upside, I everything I memorized for the exam was useful in real life (unlike the bar exam). As an aside, I found taking the CIPP exam in a paper format (as opposed to on a computer) a lot easier. If you like paper too, opt to take the exam at a conference instead of at a testing center. Best of luck - and welcome to privacy - a great profession that keeps improving because it values collaboration over litigation. Go figure!
